イギリス・パンケーキレースの旅 (15)〜隣りの女の子 The Pancake Race Trip 15 - A girl next to me

*English follows. これは2023年2月18日から25日まで、パンケキーレースの視察で、イギリスのオルニーという町を訪れたときのレポートです。

私がOMSを訪問した時子ども達は皆、SATsテストに向けて算数の勉強をしていました。校長先生が体育館を案内してくれた時、そこには5年生がいて、全員で机を並べて勉強していました。私は子ども達の前方を通って体育館の端に行き、子ども達に一瞬背を向ける形で校長先生から説明を受けていました。

そしたら背後から突然「こんにちは」と日本語で可愛らしい声が聞こえました。振り返ると髪の毛の長い金髪の、目のクリックリッとした女の子がこちらを上目遣いに見て微笑んでいました。

「こんにちは。Are you learning Japanese?」

と聞いたら、

"No, but I was next to you yesterday, at the race."

前日のパンケーキレースのときに私の横にいて私が日本と中継していたのを聞いていたというのです。校長先生が、この子が今年のパンケーキレースの冊子の表紙を描いたんですよと教えてくれました。

ということはアメリちゃん！！

パンケーキレースを取材しているときに「表紙のイラストが素晴らしいですね〜」絵の下のクレジットを見て「アメリちゃんという子が描いたんですね〜」と沿道の日本の方と雑談していたのです。まさかその当人が私の横にいて会話を聞いていたとは！

"So you're that Amelie! I'm happy to meet you. I like your cover illustration!"

彼女は嬉しそうにうなづきました。私が会話の中で日本語で「こんにちは」と言ったのを側で聞いて覚えたのか、そもそも知っていたのかは分かりませんが、とにかく私のことを覚えていてくれて日本語で話しかけてきてくれたのは本当に嬉しかったです。

パンケーキレースの冊子の表紙に選ばれるのは大変なことだということを次回書きたいと思います。

This is a journal on a visit to the town of Olney in UK from the 18th-25th of February 2023 to do research on the Pancake Race.

When I visited OMS, all the children were studying math for their SATs tests. When the principal showed me around the gymnasium, there were 5th graders there, all studying at their desks. I walked in front of the children to the edge of the gymnasium and turned my back for a moment to them as the principal explained what was going on.

Then suddenly I heard a cute voice behind me say "konnichiwa" in Japanese. I turned around and saw a blonde girl with long hair and round eyes looking up at me and smiling.

"Hello, Are you learning Japanese?", I asked. "No, but I was next to you yesterday, at the race."

She said she had been beside me at the Pancake Race the day before and had heard me live broadcasting the race to Japan. The principal told me that she had drawn the cover of this year's Pancake Race booklet.

Wait. That Amelie!

When I was covering the Pancake Race, I was chatting with a Japanese lady along the route, saying, "The illustration on the cover is wonderful." I looked at the credits under the picture and said, "It was drawn by a girl named Amelie." I had no idea that the girl in question was standing beside me, listening to our conversation!

"So you're that Amelie! I'm happy to meet you. I like your cover illustration!"

She nodded happily. I don't know if she remembered hearing me say "konnichiwa" in Japanese beside her during our conversation, or if she originally knew the Japanese word. Anyway, I was really happy that she remembered me and spoke to me in Japanese.

I will write next time about how hard it is to be chosen for the cover of the Pancake Race booklet.

*I checked the photos on my mobile phone, and sure enough, there was Amelie.
