イギリス・パンケーキレースの旅 (8) 〜大人レース開始時間の謎 The Pancake Race Trip 8-Mystery of the Time to Start the Race

*English follows. これは2023年2月18日から25日まで、パンケキーレースの視察で、イギリスのオルニーという町を訪れたときのレポートです。

レースの歴史ははっきりしないようですが、パンケーキを焼いていた女性が、礼拝の始まりを告げる教会の鐘が鳴るの聞いて、慌ててフライパンを持ったまま走り出したのが始まりというのが定説です。

レースのスタートは11時55分。なぜこんな中途半端な時間かというと、走ってギリギリ礼拝に間に合う時間ということで、コースは町の中心から教会がゴールになっています。フィニッシュしたランナー達は、すぐに教会で”告解の火曜日礼拝”に参加します。表彰は礼拝の中で行われるのです。

さて今年の優勝者はEloise Kramerさんでした。タイムは65秒！コースの長さは415ヤード（約380m）ですから、100mを17秒ちょっとで走った計算になります。20代女性の100m走の平均が17.9秒だそうなので、フライパンを持っているハンデを考えるとかなり速いスピードです。しかし年齢を問わず参加しているので、速さを競うだけではない住民の行事なのが伺えます。

オルニーに住んでいるか働いている女性のみ参加資格がありますが、走者の中に日本人の女性がいました。イギリス人の男性と結婚して２年前からこちらに住んでいるそうです。私の周りのイギリス人は誰もオルニーのことを知らなかったので、まさか日本人がいるなんて思いもしませんでした。しかも参加は今回が初めてとのこと。実は彼女のご主人のおかげで行き詰まっていた次の計画が展開していきます。

でもその前に次回は、レース後のパーティーで突然「こんにちは」と日本語で挨拶してくれたアメリカ人ボブのことを書きます。

The history of the Pancake Race is uncertain. It is a common theory that it began when a woman who was baking pancakes heard the church bells ringing to announce the beginning of the service and hurriedly started running there with the frying pan in her hand.

The race starts at 11:55 am. The reason for this halfway time is that it is just in time to run and make it to the service. The course starts in the center of town and finishes at the church. After finishing, runners immediately attend a "Confession Tuesday" service at the church. Awards are presented during the service.

This year's winner was Eloise Kramer. Her time was 65 seconds! The course is 415 yards (about 380m) long, which means she ran 100m in a little over 17 seconds, which is quite fast considering the handicap of holding a frying pan, since the average 100 m time for women in their 20s is 17.9 seconds. But people of all ages participate, so you can see that this is not just a speed competition, but a residents' event.

Only women who live or work in Olney are eligible to participate, and one of the runners was a Japanese woman. She is married to an English man and has been living there for two years. As none of the British people around me had heard of Olney, I was surprised that there was a Japanese woman there. This was her first time to participate. The meeting with her and her husband would result in leading to the way out of my next plan, which had been a standstill. 

Before that, I will have to write about Bob, an American man who suddenly greeted me in Japanese with a "konnichiwa(hello)" at the post-race party.
