水道水がそのまま飲める国

シナは水道水がそのまま飲めない国に、そして、日本は水道水がそのまま飲める国になっている（国交省の文書の「図Ⅰ‐3‐3 世界の水道水の現状」）。

アイルランドはどうか。同文書で「水道水がそのまま飲める国」になっている。しかし、現実にはそうでもない場所がある。ドネゴール地方に行った時、ある場所で「ここの水は飲めない」と現地の人にいわれたことがある。

welq のページだと、「アイルランドの水道水は硬水の地域が多いが、そのまま飲むことができます。日本並みに安全なのだそうです。ただ、クレア州、ゴールウェイ州などの地域は、適切な水道完備がなされていないようなので、こちらの地域に行かれる際は、ミネラルウォーターを購入するのがいいでしょう」と書いてある。そうなのか。

毎年のようにアイルランドに行く身としては気になる。Uisce Éireann のページでは地域ごとに調査した値が分かるようにはなっているが、この値を見て一般人が安全性を判断できるかどうかは別問題だ。

New York Times の2007年9月11日の記事には Gerard O’Leary, program manager at Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency という、しかるべき立場のひとに訊いてまとめた内容がある。ある程度参考になるので引用しておく。分りやすい指標は、〈バスルームのシンクからは飲むな〉だ。ただ、その洗面台の水は歯磨きには使用してもよいと。

A good rule of thumb is that in bigger towns like Dublin, Limerick and Cork you should feel very safe to drink the water, but in rural areas you may want to cautiously avoid ice cubes and stick to bottled water. Many hotels and restaurants around the country also have their own water filter system that would make it safe to drink, so ask the bed-and-breakfasts where you are staying about that if you wish.

No matter where you go in Ireland, however, you should avoid drinking from the bathroom sink. When I lived in a Dublin apartment in 1998 and 1999, my flatmate, who was Irish, told me not to drink the water from the bathroom tap. Mr. O’Leary confirmed that this is wise advice, even now, because the water that supplies kitchen sinks (where potability samples are taken) is fresh, but bathroom water comes from cisterns, where fresh-water runoff is stored and can become stagnant. Bathroom sink water is fine for brushing teeth though.

アイルランドの硬水で淹れた紅茶は世界一の味だと思っている私には気になる話題でした。
