ラグビー・アイルランド・チームの公式歌 'Ireland's Call' を取上げます。

ラグビーW杯で来日し、日本との大熱戦を繰広げたアイルランド。試合の始めに歌われるのは国歌でなく、'Ireland's Call' という、南北アイルランド統一チームの歌です。

この歌を作ったのは名ピアニストの Phil Coulter で、他にも数々の素晴らしい作品で知られています。

歌詞は英詩としてやや難しい語法を含んでいます。どんな歌なのでしょう。

試合で実際に(国歌の代わりに)歌われるのは、コーラス部分と1番の歌詞だけなので、今回はそこだけを考えます。

1 Come 接続法現在。主語と倒置され「〜がくると」の意になる(下記の〈解釈〉参照)。続く2つの come も同じ。例 He will be fifty come Christmas. クリスマスがくると彼は50歳になる
3 call 「召集」。「使命」のニュアンスもある。answer a call「召集に応じる」
4 provinces「地方」。アイルランド語の cúige に相当する。この語はアイルランド語の cúig「5」から来ており、もともとアイルランド全土を5つに分けた区分のことである。ここで4つの provinces とされているのは、アイルランドの中心とされた Teamhair (Tara) のある province 以外の4つ、すなわち、the Province of Connacht, the Province of Leinster, the Province of Munster, the Province of Ulster のこと。この4つはアイルランド語では、Cúige Chonnacht, Cúige Laighean, Cúige Mumhan, Cúige Uladh という。2連に出てくる4つの地名、Antrim, Galway, Limerick, Dublin はそれぞれ Ulster, Connacht, Munster, Leinster の province に属する
