英語日記#16 最高にロックなアクシデント

みなさまお久しぶりです。
Lunaです。

英語日記の毎日投稿が、しょうもないことで途絶えてしまい、
大変悲しいです。

事情をきいてください。

I'm currently staying with a host family in Turkey, and just the other day, the Wi-Fi at home completely died. From the moment I moved in, I’ve had to restart my laptop every ten minutes or limit the number of devices using Wi-Fi to two, which was already pretty frustrating.

I finally reached my limit and decided to report the issue to the owner. He happens to be an IT engineer, so he acted quickly to fix it, which I appreciated. But then the unthinkable happened.

The Wi-Fi disappeared entirely from the available networks on my phone. The owner and I both panicked. He had taken all the right steps, but the Wi-Fi vanished. And just like that, my life without Wi-Fi began.

At first, I thought, "No big deal," because I’m using a mobile carrier called ahamo, which lets me use up to 20GB of data abroad.

I figured I could just manage with that, but right then, I got an SMS from ahamo. It said, “You've been abroad for more than 15 days, so from today, your connection speed will be slowed.”

Now, you might think, "Well, as long as she still has data, no problem, right?" Well, we’re on the same wavelength.

Being the optimist I am, I thought, "Okay, fine, got it!" and tried to open Google. But no matter how long I waited, Google wouldn’t load. I was in the middle of boiling potatoes and wanted to check the cooking time, but the screen didn’t budge.

I put my head in my hands and thought, "Come on!" I didn’t come to Turkey for a digital detox! It’s been days of slow internet driving me crazy. I can’t even open Gmail, let alone Note. My streak of daily posts is broken. It's heartbreaking.

But what’s really been driving me up the wall is how many things I couldn’t do: No music on YouTube Music, no recipes for cooking, and worst of all, I couldn’t check how close I was to my credit card limit. I have a student card with a low limit, so even when I think I haven’t spent much, I’m often cutting it close. Each time I went shopping, I was worried. As a result, I've been starving these past few days.

Finally, I got a replacement modem, so I have some access now, but it still cuts off every 10 minutes. The constant need to restart my computer has been torture.

It took me over an hour just to upload this post. I’ve restarted and troubleshot so many times today. I haven’t been this frustrated in a while.

私は今トルコでホームステイをしていますが、先日、
お家のWifiが完全に逝ってしまいました。
ホームステイ当初から、10分おきにパソコンの再起動をしなければならなかったり、Wifiを使用する端末の数を2個以下にしなければならなかったり、Wifiの接続に関してかなりストレスを感じていました。

ついに我慢も限界まで到達し、先日オーナーへ報告しました。
彼はITエンジニアをしているそうで、すぐに対応をしてくれました。
彼のその姿勢に感謝しつつも、事件は起こりました。

スマホの使用できるWifiリストから、家のWifiが完全に消えたのです。
これにはオーナーも私も大慌て。
彼の対処に間違いはないように思えました。
しかし、家のWifiは消えました。
こうしてWifiなし生活が始まったのです。

しかしながら、私は”まあ大丈夫だろう”、と高を括っていました。
なぜなら、私は今、ahamoという通信会社と契約しており、
20GBまで海外でもギガが使えるのです。

よし、ギガで何とかするか、と思った矢先に
ahamoから一件のSMSが来ていました。内容は、
「15日以上海外にいるから、今日から通信速度下がるよー」
というものでした。

「ギガが使えなくなるわけじゃないから問題ないでしょ」
と思ったそこのあなた。

私と気が合いますね。

私は基本的に楽天家なので、
「OKOK！了解！」と思いつつGoogleを開きました。

そして、待てど暮らせどGoogleが開かないんですね。
もう震えが止まりませんでした。

ジャガイモをゆでている最中だったので、
そのゆで時間を検索しているのに、全く画面が切り替わらないんですね。

おいおいおいおい。とさすがに頭を抱えました。
トルコにデジタルデトックスしに来たんじゃないぞ、私は。
まあ、そう思いました。

Gmailすら開かないので、もちろんnoteも開きません。
しっかり連続投稿記録も途絶えました。
悲しいです。

でもそんなことを言っていられないほど、
頭がおかしくなりそうな数日間でした。

音楽を聴こうにもYouTube Musicも開かない。
料理を作ろうにもレシピも調べられない。
一番困ったのは、クレジットカードの限度額まであとどのくらいかが確認できなかったこと。
私が持っているクレジットカードは学生カードなので、
限度額が低く、そんなに使っていないつもりでも、
案外ぎりぎりなことが多いのです。

買い物のたびに心配でした。
おかげでこの数日間、ずっとお腹を空かせていました。ひもじい。

現在は代替機が来て、何とかアクセスできているのですが、パソコンだと10分くらいで落ちます。
再起動を何回もしなければならないので、かなり苦痛です。
本当にイライラします。

今日もこのnoteを投稿するのに、1時間以上かかりました。
何度再起動/トラブルシューティングを実施したか。
「下書きの保存に失敗しました」が6回出てきましたよ。
久しぶりに本気で腹を立てています。

オーナーにではないですよ。
