#3【READ】To women considering to study in UAEU

To who is considering to study abroad in the UAEU either as an exchange student for a semester or two semesters, not a full time student or as female students. I would like you to kindly be noted several things below. I’ve been in UAEU as an undergraduate exchange student from Japan in 2022 Fall to 2023 Spring.

1. going out restrictions(only in female hostels)

If you are female and live in UAEU hostels, you are not allowed to go outside the school or your hostel more than three times a week regardless of your religions, marriage, age, nationalities. It applies to you even if you are married and have children.

2. permissions from your father(only in female hostels)

If you want to go outside for shopping or hanging out with friends and you are female, you are supposed to get a permission from your father both via email with his passport photos and international call (WhatsApp, WeChat, LINE, Cacao talk, zoom, any call works).

3. receiving deliveries restrictions(only in female hostels)

If you are female, you are not allowed to get delivery services after 12am of before 7am.

4. curfew(only in female hostels)

You can go outside during 7am to 11pm if you are female.

5. attendance(only in female hostels)

You are supposed to be taken attendance around 8pm - 9pm either in the reception/admin or in the supervisor room of each buildings if you are female. It is called "Tamam" meaning "ok" in Arabic. If you do not go to Tamam, you will get a call from your student supervisor in your building. Or you will receive emails from madams telling you should go to Tamam ASAP.

6. food fee and housing fee

If you are a visiting student(an exchange student), not a full time student who belongs to the UAEU such as international students, those in MA or PhD, your meals in cafeterias are NOT INCLUDED in your housing fee even though you would pay the same amount as other students. Specifically, students in the UAEU’s hostels pay 5600 AED per semester for a room, transportations between the campus and a hostel of the university, cleaning room services and meals for three times a day. However, it is not the case for exchanges or visiting researchers. It means, they have to pay extra for meals when they want to eat. If you eat three times a day, it costs 2000 AED monthly. Credit cards are not accepted, cash only.

7. meals environment

None the less to say, there is no 24H convenience stores around the campus or hostels that sell fresh salads or groceries. It is impossible to go for walks for a minutes and get food here considering the geography and temperature. There are small stores in hostels and the campus with certain opening hours, they don’t sell fruits, vegetables, meats, fish. They sell milk, plant milk by alpro, yogurt, snacks, ice creams, croissants, bottles of water, personal care products, seasonings such as spices and so forth. Sanitary pads are available here.

You can see photos of the supermarket inside hostels.

8. delivery in AlAin

You can order ready-to-go meals and get groceries stuff because a delivery service named “Talabat” and  “Carrefour” which is a French supermarket’s app are very common here. Usually you can get groceries and stuff on the order day or next day. Please not that you rarely find information such as allergen, gluten, ingredients of products on those apps.

9. delivery meals

Most of ready-to-eat meals on delivery app are fast food with high calories, carbon hydrates, and fat. Having visited from Japan, I personally feel even falafel is too oily for me as a vegetarian.

10. life in male hostels

Lastly, If you are a male student, you can go outside wherever and whenever you want without any registration nor permissions from your parents. Also, you can get delivery services that you order 24h/7. No attendance in your hostel everyday.

11. LASTLY

please be noted that those information about UAEU hostel life are NOT on the UAEU website at all. You can refer information about the housing fee which does not contain food fee, but you cannot find any restrictions in hostels especially for female students.
