英語日記#21 なぜ本より動画から情報収集してしまうのか？

今日は北海道に滞在しているのですが、めちゃ寒いです。もはや軽いダウンぐらい着ても良いのではと思うくらい寒いです。

I'm staying in Hokkaido today, but it's very cold.  It's so cold that I think it's okay to wear light down.


今日は本より動画を見てしまう理由をお話しをしたいと思います。元々私自身は本をあまり読まないです。年間読んで3冊から5冊程度です。一方で動画については年間365本以上見ている気がします。なぜ動画を見てしまうのか？また本より動画で情報をなぜインプットしているのかをお話ししたいと思います。

Today I would like to talk about why I watch videos more than books.  I personally don't read many books.  I read about 3 to 5 books a year.  On the other hand, I feel like I watch more than 365 videos a year.  Why do you watch videos?  Also, I would like to talk about why I input information in videos rather than books.

主に4つの理由から動画シフトが進んでいると思いますので、その理由を日記にまとめたいと思います。

I think there are four main reasons why the video shift is progressing, so I would like to summarize the reasons in my diary.


①無料で多種多様な動画コンテンツが視聴できるようになった。

動画は基本的にテレビで見る、または映画で見るものという認識が多くの人にあったと思います。テレビについては、ブルーレイディスクの登場により、保存して好きなタイミングで見る事ができるようになりました。さらにYouTubeでは、誰でも動画コンテンツを簡単に作成できるようになり、かつそれを多くに人に届けることができるようになりました。このプラットフォーマーの強さが動画業界を大きく変革したと思います。

(1) You can now watch a wide variety of video content for free.

 I think many people have the perception that videos are basically something to watch on TV or in movies.  As for TV, with the advent of Blu-ray discs, it has become possible to save and watch at any time.  Furthermore, YouTube has made it possible for anyone to easily create video content and deliver it to many people.  I believe that the strength of this platform has revolutionized the video industry.


②通信環境が大きく改善した
昔の携帯では動画はコマ送りくらいの速度でしたので、いつもイライラしていました。ところが今は、何のストレスも感じないくらい、高いレベルの通信環境が基本になっていると思います。また料金についても無制限で見れるようになり、家計への負担も視聴体験も通信環境の進化により、劇的に変化したと思います。

(2) The communication environment has greatly improved.
 In my old mobile phone, the video was frame-by-frame, so it was always frustrating.  However, now, I think that a high-level communication environment is the foundation, so that you do not feel any stress.  In addition, it became possible to watch without any charges, and I think that the burden on the household budget and the viewing experience have changed dramatically due to the evolution of the communication environment.


③本を読む時間がなくなっている。または、動画の方がコスパが良く情報を得られる。

文庫本を一冊読もうと思うと、早い人で一日、長い人は一週間または、時には一か月かけるような人もいると思います。その時間を確保しなければならないです。
動画であればもしかすると7分くらいで本一冊の要約動画や中身をかなり深く説明した動画が上がってきます。
同じ本の内容を7分で見れるのです。もし詳細を知りたければ動画を見てから概略を掴んでから本を読めば、内容も深く理解できるし、読む速度も早くなり、コスパが良く本に触れ会えるようになったと思います。その影響で情報収集の選択肢として、本の優先順位が落ちていると感じます。

(3) I don't have time to read books.  Or, videos are more cost-effective and information can be obtained.

 If you want to read a paperback book, I think that some people take a day at the earliest, a week at the longest, or even a month at times.  I have to secure that time.
 If it's a video, maybe in about 7 minutes, a summary video of the book or a video that explains the contents quite deeply will come up.
 You can see the contents of the same book in 7 minutes.  If you want to know the details, watch the video and then read the book to get an overview.  As a result, I feel that the priority of books as an option for information gathering is falling.

④ユーザーが求める情報が細分化、詳細化しできている。
本はある程度ビジネスとしての読まれる数を意識して作成されており、少しコアなユーザの痒いところまで手が届かない場合があると思います。一方で、インスタのストーリーやtiktokやYouTubeなどの動画プラットフォームから好きな情報だけ抜き取ることができるため、情報を発信してくれるクリエイターをフォローすることにより、詳細な情報取得を可能にしていると思います。

(4) Information requested by users is subdivided and detailed.
 Books are created with a certain number of people reading them as a business, and I think that there are times when it is not possible to reach the itch of a little core user.  On the other hand, since you can extract only the information you like from video platforms such as Instagram stories, tiktok, and YouTube, I think it is possible to obtain detailed information by following creators who send information. 

ちなみに
私も全国のサウナ施設を探す時に本は買いません。著名なサウナーの方の動画から情報を収集してます。

as a side note
 I also don't buy books when I look for sauna facilities nationwide.  Information is collected from videos of famous saunas.

以上の内容より私自身は今は本より動画を中心に情報収集をしています。
動画ばかり見ている反動で文章や活字の力が弱まっています。少しでも、文章力や読む力が落ちないまたは向上できるように、日記を続けたいと思っております。

From the above content, I am currently collecting information mainly on videos rather than books.
 The power of sentences and type is weakened by the recoil of watching videos all the time.  I would like to keep a diary so that my writing and reading skills do not decline or improve even a little.
