第4部 豪邸に暮らす［22］ジョージアン様式 Phipps 邸

21-2 　邸宅へ引っ越す

　Phipps 邸の仕事が決まってから、流雲は同棲生活に悩んでいた。ホーリーは同棲生活を気軽に考えているが.....。流雲は日本社会の中で群れることが出来ずに疎外感を感じアメリカに逃げて来た。日本には、集団の和を大切にする「ムラ社会」への帰属意識が根本にある。ムラ意識には他者との良好関係を保持しようとする相互協調的な圧力がある。
　流雲は子供時代のイジメにより、閉じられた共同体の「物の見方」や「善悪の基準」は空気感によりコロコロ変わるムラ意識を体験してきた。

　本郷村で温かい人間関係が築かれたのは祖父と雲龍院の存在が大きく。流雲は祖父の孫として受け入れられたが〝よそ者″として暮らしてきた。
　日本では自分の所属する「ムラ」の「和」を保つ作法が求められる。ムラ意識とは、無条件に習慣を踏襲し一切抗わない生き方である。

　約1年間のアメリカ生活で「ムラ意識」から解放された。デンヴァ―の暮らしの中で、群れずにフランクな付き合い方の心地良さを知った。ヒッピーのように自由に放浪する気楽な生き方に感化された。流雲はアメリカ的な大らかな個人主義に共感を覚えた。

　2週間後の週末に、Phipps 邸 への引っ越しが決まった。
　ジェフにホーリーとの同棲を報告すると......。
「Ryu, have you ever lived together?」
「Of course not. This is my first time.」
「Ryu, are you nervous about living with an American?....... アメリカ人と暮らす不安は無いの？........ Will you be okay with the complications that come with living together?.....二人で暮らすとなると窮屈なことが出てくるけど大丈夫？」
「I don't have any worries.....特に不安は抱いて無いけど...... Is it difficult to live with Americans?.....アメリカ人と暮らすのは大変なの？」
「Ryu, I think you will be confused because of the different culture and lifestyle......文化や生活習慣が違うから戸惑うと思うよ......」
「I see.」
「My advice is to make sure you express your feelings of appreciation in your words and manner......確実に感謝を言葉や態度で示すことが大事だよ...... Also, it is important to talk to each other when a problem occurs without setting detailed rules.......それと問題が起きた時に話し合うことが大事だろうね...... Americans believe that communication is the most important thing......アメリカ人はコミュニケーション最も大事と考えているからね」
「I see. I see. Thank you. I'll consider that......なるほどね。ありがとう。参考にするよ」
（同棲を真剣に考えないと.......)

　引越し前日。ホーリーの部屋の引越しの片付けをしていると、ジェフとアンが手伝いにやって来た。突然、アンが.....。
「Holly, congratulations. I hope you two will be happy together.」
「Ann, we're not getting married. We are just going to live together......結婚する訳じゃないわ。ただ一緒に暮らすだけよ」
「But you're planning to get married, aren't you?」
「Ryu and I are still students and we don't have jobs, so we can't decide whether to get married or not. I don't know about that yet.....そんなの未だ分からないわ。Ryuも私も未だ学生だし、仕事もないのに結婚するかどうか決められないわよ」 
「Yes, that's good. I love the idea of freedom.....自由で私はそういう考え大好きよ」
「Ann, thank you. What about cohabitation in England?......イギリスでは同棲は？」
「In the younger generation, it's not a special thing...... 若い世代では別に特別なことではない筈よ......They think it's just sharing a life.......暮らしを共有するだけと考えているわ」

　ジェフが.......。
「Does Holly's parents know?」
「Of course they do. If I'm happy, they're happy.」
「How will you live?」
「We both work and go to school...... 二人で働きながら学校に通うわ......I'm happy because I get to live with him......一緒に住めるから私はハッピーよ....... And we'll get free housing so that we can save on living expenses...... 住む所がタダになるから生活費はセーブ......」
「Both Holly and Ryu are very progressive......ホーリーもリュも進歩的ね...... I thought the English were more open than the Japanese.......日本人よりイギリス人の方がオープンだと思っていたけど」
「Ann, Japan is very closed......日本はとても閉鎖的だよ......there is an incomprehensible word "international marriage"......”国際結婚”とい意味不明の言葉が日本がある..... Now, if I were to walk around with Holly in Japan, I think we would be stared at like a publicity stunt...... 今、ホーリーと一緒に日本で歩いていたら、僕たちは晒し物の目で見られると思うよ」
「Why are they staring anyway?.......」
「Well, basically they just don't have many foreigners in Japan......日本国内には外国人が少ないからだよ」
「That's why. I'm worried......僕は不安だよ......I can't consider living in Japan.......日本に住むことは考えられない」
「Ryu, Japan is such a closed country? I can hardly believe it......それ程閉鎖的なの？ちょっと信じられない？」
「I guess so. In a good way, Japan has its own culture, but being an island nation, it has a closed culture to protect......良い意味では独自文化があるが、日本は島国だから守ろうとする閉鎖性がある」
「I see. Well, could you make up your mind?......良く決断できたわね？」
「I am nervous about it......僕は不安だよ..... It's a different culture, and I'm worried about living together......文化も違うし一緒に暮らす不安はあるよ...... It's been a natural flow since last year, but I think we will continue to flow naturally. I'm just going to go with the flow.......昨年からの自然の流れでこうなったけど。このまま自然体で流れて行こうと思う」
「Ryu, That's right. I saw how natural you are, and I thought we could live together......そうよ。貴方のその自然体の姿を見て、一緒に住んでもやっていけると思ったのよ」
「Oh, Holly, you are in love with each other. I wish you all the best.....ホーリー、 貴方は本当にラブラブなのね。幸せにね」
「Ann, thank you so much.」　

　その夜。4人でDU 近くのピザレストランに出掛ける。
　ジェフとアンはピザとビールを注文する。するとジェフが.......。
「Tonight we celebrate. Well, let's have a Toast with beer. Congratulations to both of you, Ryu and Holly...... 今晩はお祝いだね。じゃ、ビールで乾杯しよう。Ryu, Holly 二人共、おめでとう....... I wish you all the best. Cheers!」
「Congratulations! Cheers!」
「Thank you, guys.」

　未だ、生活が始まっていないのに何か新婚生活が始まる雰囲気に戸惑いを覚えたが。何だか幸せな気分に嬉しさが込み上げてきた。その夜は二人がご馳走してくれた。
　引越しの日。流雲は荷物はトランクひとつに収めたが、ホーリーは車に積めない大きな荷物がある。引越しの手伝いにジェフとアン、 Phipps 園丁がトラックで駆けつけた。
「Everyone, he is Earl. He is the gardener and is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the mansion's garden......邸宅の庭の手入れから維持管理を行う責任者よ......From now on, he will be your colleague......あなたと一緒に働く同僚よ」
「Nice to meet you, Earl. My name is Ryu. Thank you for your help today.」
　紹介されたのは、身体のがっしりした黒人の男性。流雲が身近に接する黒人男性は年齢が不詳で少し近寄りがたかった。話し始めると優しい眼差しと屈託のない笑顔に強く惹きつけられた。大きな引っ越し荷物があるが、独身女性だからベッドに机と本棚と衣装ダンスくらいだ。アールのピックアップ・トラックに余裕で積み込む。
　アールは人が良いのか。殆どの荷物をひとりで積み込んでくれた。

「Holy,  why is he being so nice?」
「I agree.  He's really kind and I was surprised at first too.......本当に優しい人で私も最初はびっくりしたわ....... I think he has the heart of Southern hospitality......彼はサザン・ホスピタリティの心があるわ」
「What do you mean by Southern hospitality?.....サザン・ホスピタリティと言うのは？」
「The concept of Southern hospitality comes from the biblical parable of the 『 Good Samaritan』 which is the idea that we should be kind to people in traditional Southern culture......サザン・ホスピタリティの概念は、聖書の『善きサマリア人』のたとえ話から生まれたもので、南部の伝統的な文化で人に親切にすべきだという考え方よ」
「Is there a culture of hospitality in the South?......南部におもてなし文化があるの？」
「Yes, we do. There is a Southern proverb that describes a guest......そうね。南部でゲストをもてなすことわざに『No strangers, only friends we have not yet met.』......『見知らぬ人はいません。まだ会ったことのない友達だけです』と言う言葉があるわ」
「......？」
(確かに、フレンドリーで愛想の良いアメリカ人が多い気がする。前の人がドアを抑えて微笑んでくれるのも、サザン・ホスピタリティなのかもしれない）

　Phipps 邸に到着し裏口にトラックを駐車すると.......。ウィリアム教授が待っていた。
　ホーリーに走り寄ると、ウィリアム教授は.......。
「The construction on your apartment building is not finished......君たちのアパートの工事が終わっていない...... Yesterday, the contractor did not show up and work was thrown out in the middle of the project......昨日、工事業者が現れずに工事が途中のままに...... It was supposed to be completed yesterday......昨日完了予定だったが......」
「Tom, do we have to find a hotel for tonight?.....私たちはホテルを探さなければならないのかしら？」
「Holly, I got permission from the University for you to stay in the main house until your apartment is ready, so you should be fine......アパートの準備ができるまで、母屋に滞在する許可を大学から取ったから大丈夫だよ...... I have Mrs. Margaret's bedroom cleaned and ready for use......マーガレット夫人の寝室を使用できるようにクリーンアップし準備してあるよ」

　ホーリーが、本当は.......「Our apartment is in the old Servant Court. Now I'll show you the main house.....私たちの居室は昔のサーバントコートなの......Construction is behind schedule, but they are going to tear down the walls in this room to make it more usable......工事がおくれているけど、この部屋の壁を取り壊して、使いやすくしてくれることになっているの」
「So, you're getting free rent on this space? That's great.....このスペースで家賃がタダなの？ それは凄いわ」
「When the work is done, we'll decorate and renovate the space to make it more comfortable.....工事が終わったら、快適なスペースになるわ.....Jeff & Ann, let me give you a tour of the mansion.」
「Holly, Not today. You still have a lot of work to do.......今日は良いわ。未だ片付けなければならないだろうから...... If you're going to live here, we can come to visit anytime we want, right?......ここに住むなら、いつでも私たちが訪ねて来ても良いのでしょう」
「Yes, of course. Well, when our apartment is ready to live in, you can visit us......それじゃ、私たちの居室が住めるようになったら、遊びに来て......」
　
　荷物を倉庫に片付け終わり、ホーリーは寝室を見て......「Ryu, let's go shopping at Target.....Okay, but what are we going to buy?.......何を買いに行くの？」
「Ryu, the beds in the Main House look clean, but I don't want to use the old sheets...... 今晩は新しいシーツを使いたいから.......」
「.......」

　郊外の大型ディスカウント・ストア” Target”に出掛ける。
「It's a big store. How long has it been there?」
「I think it's the late 1960s, but I'm not sure. Denverites call Target "Tarzhay" in French. They don't like the idea of a discount store......デンヴァー人はフランス語風に"タージェイ"と呼んでいるわ。ディスカウントショップのイメージが嫌みたいなの」
「Hmmm... I see.」
　店舗に入ると、ホーリーは” Wedding Bedding”のコーナーに直行する。
　高級そうなシーツと羽毛の掛け布団セットの品定めすると......Ryu, how about this bedding do you like?.....と聞いてくる......流雲が適当に応えると......Ryu, Tonight, our evening together, feels very special, don't you think?......今夜、一緒に過ごす夜は、とても特別な気分なんだけど？......。

　慌てて「Sorry, Holly. Sorry. Don't think about your feelings......そうだよね。ごめんね。君の気持を考えないで......」
「Ryu, Thank you. I'm going to have this interlocking ring pattern bedding set. The design of the intertwined rings is meant to signify the lasting happiness of two people....... ありがとう。私、このインターロッキング・リング模様のべディング・セットにするわ。絡み合うリングのデザインには、2人の永続的な幸せを意味が込められているの......So I want to bring good luck too......だから、私も縁起を担ぎたいわ」
　ホーリーの好きな淡い Golden-Brown の寝具と連動リングがキルティングされたコンフォーターのセットを購入する。 

　館に帰ると、二人で寝具をセットする。古めかしい雰囲気の寝室が、一気に華やかなベッドルームに変身した。
　何とか快適な夜が過ごせる準備が終わると、ホーリーが......「Ryu, I made a reservation for tonight.  Mom and Dad gave us a present. Congratulations on your new life together.......今夜はレストランを予約したの。パパとママがプレゼントしてくれたの。二人の新生活のお祝いだって」
「Huh, I was surprised. Will you congratulate me on living together? Why?.......へー、驚いたなぁ。 同棲するのを祝ってくれるの？ なぜ？」
「Why? They’re happy with my new life with Ryu.」
「That's nice, but aren't your parents too progressive?........それは嬉しいけど、君の両親は進歩的すぎない？...... I still can't tell my parents I'm moving in with you......僕は、未だ両親に一緒に住むとは報告できてないよ」
「Is that so?........そうなの？......But it's not normal. Because they respect my way of thinking and my way of life....... でも、普通じゃない。両親は私の考えや生き方を尊重してくれているから....... Indeed, there are a lot of gays in the town of New Hope, and a little on the progressive side to it...... 確かにニューホープの町にはゲイが多く、少し進歩的な面はあるかもね」
(それにしても、ひとり娘の同棲を祝う親がいるのか？これがアメリカのか？)
