インスタグラム黎明期の極私的想い出 (8): 2012年の買収後の変化
これは「インスタグラム黎明期の極私的想い出 (7)」の続きです）
インスタグラム本を書かれたサラ・フライヤー (Sarah Frier) さんからインタビューを受けた時に提出した資料、および10年ほど前にインスタの中の人たちとやりとりしたメールなどを元に綴る昔話。
前回は、いちユーザとしても、開発協力者としても、最も楽しかった時期（〜2011年末頃）まで書きました。
8回目となる今回はその続きです。世間をあっと驚かせた2012年4月9日の買収のニュース、その後徐々に起こっていった変化についてです。
The News That Surprised The World /
世界を驚かせたあのニュース
毎日のように楽しく写真を投稿し、日本語文言やアプリをリファインし続けていたあの頃。ちょうどあのニュースの直前にはこんな写真を投稿していました。
(Apr. 8, 2012) LITTLE CHAIR UMPIRES: "My papa will win the match!" "No, my papa will!" / 「ぜったい パパが かつよ！」「ちがうよ わたしの パパが かつもん！」
そういえば、初の Android 版がリリースされたのもちょうどこの時期、2012年4月3日でしたね。これでますますユーザが増えることになりました。
で、あのニュースが飛び込んできたのでした。Facebook による Instagram 買収です。
広告もなく、動画もなく、ストーリーもなく、ダイレクトメッセージもなかった、2012年4月当時の世界中のインスタグラムユーザは、これから一体どうなってしまうんだろう、何かイヤな変化が起こらなければいいけど、と思いながらも、引き続き楽しく写真投稿やコメントでの交流を楽しんでいた記憶があります。
多言語化まわりの開発や翻訳についても、この衝撃的なニュースの直後は特に何も変わることはありませんでした。いつものように、自家製翻訳管理システム Pidgin 上での活発なやりとりが行われていましたし、そこでの作業結果は定期的なアプリアップデートの際に適切に反映されていました。
「その2」でも触れましたが、半分プライベートで来日していた Josh (Ridel) / Greg (Hochmuth) / Shayne (Sweeney) と渋谷で歓談したのもちょうどこの頃、2012年5月3日のことした。

この時に彼らに買収の話も聞いてみたのですが、はぐらかされる感じというか「特に何にも変わらないから心配ないよ」的な回答だった記憶があります。

明らかに滞り出した翻訳周りの協働
事態が動いた、というか、「あれ、なんかおかしいな？」と気付いたのは、2012年下旬に入ってからでした。
Pidgin での（自分自身以外の作業やコメントの）メール通知を最後に受け取ったのが 2012年8月7日17時19分。
ちょうど、投稿写真のロケーションごとの表示機能を備えたバージョン 3.0 が8月16日にリリースされた直後のことです。
その後、「Pidgin に最後の最後に3つだけ足りてなかった文言追加したので翻訳よろ」というメールを受け取ったのが、2012年9月19日10時14分。
この辺りを最後に、Pidgin 上でのやりとりも、メールでのやりとりも、パタっと止まってしまいました。特に何の連絡もなくなってしまったのです。
しかし、続々とベータ版やプレリリース版のリリースは続きます。
しびれを切らして、こんなメールも送ってみました。2012年11月9日7時49分のことです。

Hi Mike-san & Shayne-san,
First of all congrats on the new web profile - it's what many users have
been waiting for, actually.
On the other hand, it's been about two months since the last bunch of
untranslated strings were out on the Pidgin system (and the last prerelease
beta version was out). I guess there may be some change going on, regarding
voluntary translators and voluntary beta testers outside Instagram/Facebook
- please let me know about this just in case you don't mind.

FB Translation System Taking Over The IG One? / Facebook の翻訳に置き換わってるのでは？
ここで、ふと脳裏をよぎったのです。
Facebook には、ユーザによるクラウド翻訳の仕組みがあります（あるいは「ありました」かも）。ボランティアの無数のユーザによって、思い思いに翻訳を行い、それを同じく無数のユーザによってチェックされ、最も評価が高いと思われるものが選出され、実際の Facebook の表示画面に採用される、というものです。
Facebook に買収された Instagram アプリや web サイトについても、この仕組みによって置き換えられたのではないか？と。
それはそれで喜ばしいことです。実際、Android 版もリリースされ、アメリカと日本を含め、世界中のユーザ数がうなぎのぼりに上昇中、2010年当時の3〜4名で運営されていた時期とは大きく異なります。ブランドやサービスはそのまま継続、とはいえ、Facebook に買収されたことで、いろんな影響は受けるでしょう。特にマネタイズどうするよ、という点において。
それならそれでいいんですけど、私を含め、いままで翻訳を含めたボランティア開発協力を引き受けていた人に、そのことを連絡してくれてもいいのになぁ、とは思いました。
The Version "3.4.0" / 運命のバージョン 3.4.0
そして2012年12月21日、Instagram バージョン 3.4.0 がリリースされました。新しいフィルタが追加されていましたが、投稿操作中にクラッシュするという致命的なバグを抱えていました。
その直後、2021年12月21日9時23分付で、突然 Shane からメールが届きました。メールのサブジェクトは「Hi Kohji - help with the translation」（弘治、翻訳手伝って）でした。。。

で、今このメールを久しぶりに眺めて気付きました。このメールをもらう前に、クラッシュする問題について私の方から技術的情報を中の人たちに伝えていたみたいですね。。。残念ながらそのメールなりチャット履歴なりが残っていないのですが。
ともあれ、速攻で返事を送りました。

and confirmed it stopped crashing.

バージョン 3.4.1 でこれを修正しました。ご迷惑をおかけして申し訳ありません。
This string is a Japanese translation of the following:
Version 3.4.0 had a nasty bug that the app always crashes when trying
to post a photo under a certain environment.
The new version 3.4.1 fixes this. It's safe to upgrade.

大問題はクラッシュ以外にもありました。直前の Instagram バージョン 3.2.0 までは、 Language Ambassador (翻訳ボランティア) に文責がある文言が間違いなく使われていたのに、この Instagram バージョン 3.4.0 から、あずかり知らぬ文言が紛れ込んだり、元々の文言が改悪されたりしていたのです。
Facebook に買収された Instagram アプリや web サイトについても、この仕組み（FBのクラウド翻訳システム）に置き換えられたのではないか？
先ほど上に書いたこれを確信した瞬間でした。
で、ダメ元で Mike と Shane に FBメッセージそしてメールを送ってみたのが2012年12月22日9時37分でした。
もちろん、時代が進めば、属人的な翻訳は徐々になくなっていくものですし、そうあるべきですが、自分なりにこだわりをもって練った文言が何の説明もなく簡単に切り捨てられるのも残念なものです。

As for the Japanese translation,
I see the strings on the "pidgin.instagr.am" system and those on the
actual Instagram app are now out of sync, starting from the version 3.4.0.
My guess: the IG/FB team decided to do in-house translations
(like Mike-san kindly taught me in his previous message),
and they are using the other system than pidgin
(probably derived from Facebook?) for string internationalization.
During the transition, they started to use the same "glossaries"
(same translation for the same word), and some of the strings on the
Instagram app suffer the issue.
Translation may not always be such simple thing.
Especially, translating strings from a language to another language
(with different syntax and semantics from the former) is not simple.
Just replacing every word is not enough.
Translating a string of words considring its specific context is needed.
This is what I had done for Japanese version of Instagram for over two years.
I chose the word "フォト" for "photos" intentionally,
because in the IG app context it looked very cool and nice for
most Japanese users. But the 3.4.0 uses "写真", a normal and generic
translation of "photos".
(some people started complaining about the new translation
because it doesn't sound cool - I saw their negative comments
both on IG and Twitter)
I chose the word "時" for "h" (hours) in order to look nice in the app
timeline. English version uses "s", "m", "h", "d" and "w" for seconds,
minutes, hours, days and weeks respectively, so I adopted the
cool-looking (consistently) short Kanji strings "秒", "分", "時", "日"
and "週".
However, the newest version changes the translation of "m" from "時"
to "時間" (which is a very normal and generic translation without
considring such background context).
I chose the word "いいね!" (with a single byte exclamation mark),
not "いいね！" (with a double-byte explamation mark), because the former
looks very clean in the real app screen. But (I guess) during the merger
of FB/IG translation system, the FB version overwrote every string
that has a meaningful translation in a specific context.
The changes on the Japanese translation from 3.2.0 to 3.4.x are still
minor and easy to fix, but "many a little makes a mickle" -
although I am not a in-house FB/IG team, I am afraid that the power
toward "making translation process very simple, systematically, unified,
cutting down tiny details" will likely to lead the whole translation
quality worse in the long term, unless you dig very careful
considerations and efforts.
Sorry for taking that long, but my true hope is that Instagram will keep
very nice UX (including translation quality) in coming years.
The minor translation things I noticed on 3.4.0 might be the start of
losing translation quality and I was afraid, that was why I am writing
this message to you.

いちユーザに戻って楽しむことに
Language Ambassador としての役目はこれで終わったんだろう、と認識し、いちユーザに戻りました。
そして、日本語版開発のためにあえて日本語設定にしていた iPhone を、この時期に英語設定に戻しました（笑）
それはそれで楽しい時期でした。毎日のように投稿を行い、たくさんの like や comment をいただき、一時期はフォロアー数11万人を超えたこともありました（そのほとんどが海外ユーザでしたが）。
