意外と忙しかった冬の庭仕事

ミシシッピと言えば一年中暑いというイメージがあるかもしれませんが、実は去年も今年も非常に寒く、氷点下6℃にまでなった日もありました。主人によるとこんなに寒いのはまれだそうで、ふつうは厚手のジャケットを着るほどの寒さにはならないようです。

実際に行ったことがないのではっきりとはわかりませんが、たぶん鹿児島と同じくらいの気候なのかなと思います。

氷点下の寒さになったとはいっても、ほんの数日でしたし、夏の蒸し暑さに比べれば断然動きやすいので、この冬の期間にはいろいろなことをしました。

特に2月は樫の木の落葉のピークで毎日やってもやっても終わりがなく、私も主人も仕事の合間の空き時間の多くを落ち葉拾いに費やしていて、葉っぱのために生きてるのかと泣きたくなるくらいでした。

ま4月になり、去年植えてたしそやチャイブがわさわさと元気よく生えていっぱいになってきました。そして、すべて球根を掘り起こしたと思ったグラジオラスもあちらこちらから頭をだしてきました。それといっしょに雑草もたくさん！

自然は待ってくれませんね。がんばらないと！

When you think of Mississippi, you might think it is hot all year. But actually, the past two years were very cold, and the temperature even went down to −6 °C. According to my husband, this type of freeze is rare — normally, it hardly gets cold enough to wear a jacket.

I think the climate here is similar to that of Kagoshima, although I’m not sure because I’ve never been there.
Even though it dropped below freezing, It was only for a few days. Also, it is much easier to move around than in the summer heat and humidity, so we have gotten a lot done this winter.

In particular, February is the height of the oak leaves falling, so we had to work on that endlessly every day. We both spent lots of our free time picking up all those leaves. Feeling like I’m living just for leaves almost made me want to cry…

April is now here, and the shiso herbs and chives are growing vigorously again. And the gladiolus, which I thought I dug up all of, have sprouted up here and there. A lot of weeds are growing, too!

Nature doesn’t wait for us. We have to work hard!
