なんでフィンランド人ってみんな英語ペラペラなの?!

お久しぶりです！最後の投稿からだいぶ時間が経ってしまいました…。私の近況はというと、人間関係は今までにないほどにとても充実しているのですが、ちょっと勉強はサボりがち…。
今回はフィンランド人がネイティブと錯覚するほどぺらぺらな件についてお話ししていこうと思います！
まずフィンランドの公用語について、英語ではなく、フィンランド語、スウェーデン語、サメ語(アイヌ語のような、フィンランド人のルーツ、民族的な)です。にも関わらず、小学生からおじ様おば様まで英語を流暢に話されます！
高校で私がいつも驚かされているのが留学生がいきなり英語で話しかけてもみんながみんな流暢に返してくれるのです！
フィンランドでは小学生3年生頃から英語を習い始めるのですが、それにしてもすごい。なんで?!
仲良いフィンランド人の友達に理由を聞きまくったところ、答えは様々でしたが、1つ共通してることがありました。それは、

英語が日常の1部になっている！

多くの友達が日常的に英語を取り入れていたのです。例えば、英語のドラマ、映画が好きでずっと見ていたり、ネットを使う時は常に英語の文章を読んでいたり、趣味を英語でやっていたり…(オンラインゲームで海外の人と対戦、英語で喋るみたい)
やっぱり日常的に取り入れてなきゃいきなり喋れないよね!!
しかし、英語を趣味にする前に、基本が出来てないと何も出来ないですよね？そこはやっぱり、フィンランドの学校の仕組みがすごいのです。英語のスピーキングのテストもあったり、後回しにされがちなスピーキングの練習も考慮されてるのです！また、やはり英語の授業中もペアワークがすごく多かったり、discussionクラスがあったりと話す機会が多いです。教科書のレベルについても高校一年生のもので英検で言う準一級と言った所でしょうか。全員がそのレベルについているのはすごいですよね！
そして、フィンランドの高校の授業を受けてみて気がついたのですが、授業中にyoutubeやTedtalk、ドキュメンタリーなどの動画を見ることが多いのです。視聴する動画はフィンランド語のこともあるのですが、ほとんどの場合、英語のコンテンツなんです！しかも、字幕はあっても英語で!! 高校の授業の一部なので使われている単語などもわりと難しくて私は全部理解できないこともあるのですが、他のクラスメイトたちは視聴した内容を元にすぐにレポートを書き始めたり、先生の質問に答えられるのですごいです…！
英語がわかることが前提で高校の授業は進められているんですね。
友達によると、フィンランド語話者は世界的に見ても少ないので、深く広い情報を得られない、だから英語の勉強は必要不可欠だと言っていました。たしかに、高校の先生も分からないことがあったら英語で調べてと言っていました。英語は情報を得たり、コミュニケーションをする手段。ここまで辿り着きたいですね！

少し話が逸れるのですが、私のイタリア人の友達によると、イタリアでは小学一年生から英語を勉強し始めるそうなのですが、全く話せない人もいると言います。学校の授業は役に立たないと言っていて、彼女の英語は独学で培ったようです！
授業スタイルについてもただ先生の話を聞くだけ、と言っており気い感じだと日本のものと似ていそう！

hi! it's been a while since my last post... my current situation involves my fulfilling relationships, unlike ever before, but i 've been little bit lax with my studies. today, i'd like to talk about how Fins are so proficient in English thar they are often mistaken for English native speakers!(at least by me)

Firstly, despite the official languages in Finland are Finnish, Swedish and Sámi (a language rooted in Finnish ethnic heritage, akin to Ainu), people of all ages, from elementary students to seniors, speak English fluently! What surprises me in high school is how everyone seamlessly responds in English when approached by exchange students like me.

English education starts around the third grade in Finland, but still, it’s impressive. Why, you ask? I asked my Finnish friends about this, and while their answers varied, they all shared one thing in common : English is integrated into their daily lives!

Many friends incorporate English into their routines. For example, they enjoy watching English dramas and movies, constantly read English online, and even pursue hobbies in English (like gaming online with people from abroad). You really can’t speak fluently without integrating it into your daily life!

But before English becomes a hobby, you need to have the basics down, right? That’s where Finland’s school system shines. They have English speaking tests and even consider neglected speaking practice! Additionally, English classes often involve pair work and discussions, providing ample speaking opportunities. The textbooks are quite advanced too. It’s impressive that everyone is at that level!

Attending Finnish high school classes, I’ve noticed we often watch YouTube, TED Talks, documentaries, and such during lessons. Sometimes in Finnish, but mostly in English—with English subtitles! The vocabulary used in these videos is challenging; I don’t always understand everything, but my classmates immediately start writing reports based on what they’ve watched or can answer the teacher’s questions—it’s incredible!

In Finland, understanding English is assumed for progressing through high school classes.

To digress a bit, according to my Italian friend, they start learning English from the first grade in Italy, but some still can’t speak it. She finds school lessons useless, having learned English mostly through self-study! The teaching style seems similar to Japan’s, with students just listening to the teacher.
