According to a new study, it was almost 20 years ago that the world's leading chocolate manufacturers promised to end employment abuse. Nevertheless, research from the University of Chicago finds that more than 43% of all children aged between 5 and 17 in cocoa-growing regions of Ghana and Ivory Coast are engaged in hazardous work. Hazardous work includes the use of sharp tools, working at night and exposure to agrochemical products. Moreover, the number of children working has increased by 14% in the past decade. The problem is that cocoa production has increased over the same period.
