応仁の乱の傷痕、焼け残った「大報恩寺」の800年　 京・春の散策シリーズ　国宝 大報恩寺Ⅰ

一昨年の12月初旬まで東京国立博物館で約2カ月「京都大報恩寺"快慶・運慶"のみほとけ」と題した展覧会が行われ、人気を博したのは記憶に新しい。
その仏像が京都に戻り、本来の安置場所で改めて観たいと思い大報恩寺を訪ねた。

It’s fresh in my mind that an exhibition titled "Kyoto Daihoonji Temple - The Buddha of Kaikei and Unkei” was caught on. It was held for about two months at Tokyo National Museum until the beginning of December of last year.
Their Buddha statues have returned to Kyoto and I visited the Daihoonji temple in order to see them at their original location again.

われわれには大報恩寺というより「千本釈迦堂」という名で聞く方が馴染み深い。このお寺は周知の通り、本堂は国宝で、慶派の仏師たちが彫った仏像のほとんどが重要文化財に指定されているものばかりである。

“Senbon Shakado” is a more familiar name of Daihoonji temple for us. As you know, the main hall is a national treasure and most of the Buddha statues made by Kei artists are designated as Important Cultural Properties.

訪ねてみると参拝者はほとんどなく、ガランとした本堂内をゆっくり拝覧することができた。本尊は、快慶の弟子である行快が彫った「釈迦如来坐像」。秘仏として本堂に安置されている。本尊は外部搬出で残念ながら観ることはできなかったが、800年前のままの本堂内を堪能させていただいた。

When I visited the temple, there were almost no visitors. Therefore, I was able to look around the inside of the main hall sufficiently. The main statue, the “Shaka Nyorai Seated Statue”, was made by Gyokei who is a disciple of Kaikei. It is enshrined in the main hall as a secret Buddha Statue. Unfortunately I couldn't see it because it was carried out temporary, but I enjoyed the inside of the main hall as it was the same as 800 years ago.

本堂内の柱には多くの傷が残されている。説明によると、応仁の乱のときに西軍の拠点となり、戦った際の刀や槍のキズ痕のようである。周りは戦火で消失したが、両軍の計らいで大報恩寺は戦火を免れて残ったとされている。
門をくぐって目に入る「阿亀(おかめ)」と呼ばれる、それは見事な枝垂れ桜が迎えてくれる。その対にある松は目を奪われほど美しい。

Many scratches are left on the pillars of the main hall. According to the description, these scars were from a sword or spear on the battle during the Onin War. Its because the temple was the base of the Western Army.
Although the area around the temple was burnt down, it was said that Daihoonji Temple survived through the war by considerate arrangement of both armies.
When you enter the gate of the temple, you can see an outstanding weeping cherry tree which is called "Okame". In addition to that, you are glued on the beauty of the pine on the other side.

本堂 / Hondo

鎌倉時代に建立された大報恩寺は、数々の時代を経ていまに伝わる歴史の宝庫である。その中でも霊宝殿に安置されている仏像は見事なものばかりである。撮影が許されたので、次回にいくつかは紹介しようと思っている。

Daihoonji Temple which was built during the Kamakura era is a treasure house of history that has been passed down from many eras.
The Buddha statues enshrined in the Reihoden, a hall where temple’s treasures are kept, are all stunning. Next time I’m going to introduce some of them because I’ve got permission to shoot them.

この春の京都散策に、大報恩寺にまつわる歴史と、仏像に関心のある方には、外せない散策ルートとしてお勧めである。
