Chapter 2
　物心がついてから、40回もの春や秋を送る間に、世界の不思議を何度も見てきた。
　この前の1177年６月３日くらいには、風が強くて静まらない夜の９時ごろに南東でおこった火が北西へと広がった。朱雀門、大極殿(ﾀﾞｲｺﾞｸﾃﾞﾝ)、大学寮、民部省まで飛び火して、一晩のうちに塵や灰になってしまった。火元は樋口-富交差点にある小さな仮設の病院だったらしい。
　吹き迷う風によってあちらこちらに燃え移っていき、扇の形のように広がっていった。遠くの家では煙にむせび、近くのあたりでは炎が地面に吹きつけた。空には灰が舞い、火の光を映しながら真っ赤に染まる中、風に耐え切れずに吹き切り取られて、飛ぶようにして町々を超えて移っていく。そんな中で人々は正気でいられただろうか。煙で喉がやられて倒れたり、炎に巻き込まれてたちまち死んだり。なんとかわが身一つで逃げ出せても、資財はもちろんとりだせなくて。数々の家財道具や宝物はそっくり燃えて灰になった。大変な損害である。
　この火事でお偉いさんの家が１６戸燃えた。そのほかの家々は数もわからない。すべての都の1/3程度になったという。男女合わせて数千人が死に、馬や牛はどのくらい死んだかも分からない。
　人の営みは大概愚かだが、こんな危険な都市の中に家を建てようとしてお金を使ったり心を悩ますのは、正に馬鹿である。

　Since I can remember, I have seen many wonders of the world during the 40 springs and autumns I have lived through.
　The last time, on June 3 in 1177, a fire started in the southeast and spread to the northwest at around nine o'clock in the night when the wind was strong and unquiet. The fire spread to Suzaku-mon Gate, Daigoku-den Hall, the University Dormitory, and the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and turned to dust and ashes in the course of the night. The source of the fire was apparently a small temporary hospital at the Higuchi-Tomi intersection.
　The fire spread like a fan, with the wind blowing everywhere. Distant houses were engulfed in smoke, and nearby, flames sprayed the ground. Ashes danced in the sky, reflecting the light of the fire as it turned red, blown out of the sky by the wind and moving over the towns as if in flight. I wondered if people could stay sane in such a situation. They collapsed when their throats were attacked by the smoke, or died quickly when they were caught in the flames. Even if they managed to escape with only themselves, of course, they could not retrieve their resources. Many of my household goods and treasures were burned to ashes. It was a terrible loss.
　Sixteen houses of important people were burned in this fire. I don't even know the number of the other houses. It is said that about 1/3 of the entire city was destroyed. Thousands of men and women died, and I don't even know how many horses and cows died.
　Most human activities are stupid, but spending money and worrying about building a house in such a dangerous city is just plain stupid.

およそ物の心を知れりしよりこのかた、四十あまりの春秋をおくれる間に、世のふしぎを見ることやゝたびたびになりぬ。
いにし安元三年四月廿八日かとよ、風烈しく吹きてしづかならざりし夜、戌の時ばかり、都のたつみより火出で來りていぬゐに至る。はてには朱雀門、大極殿、大學寮、民部の省まで移りて、ひとよがほどに、塵灰となりにき。火本は樋口富の小路とかや、病人を宿せるかりやより出で來けるとなむ。
吹きまよふ風にとかく移り行くほどに、扇をひろげたるが如くすゑひろになりぬ。遠き家は煙にむせび、近きあたりはひたすらほのほを地に吹きつけたり。空には灰を吹きたてたれば、火の光に映じてあまねくくれなゐなる中に、風に堪へず吹き切られたるほのほ、飛ぶが如くにして一二町を越えつゝ移り行く。その中の人うつゝ（しイ）心ならむや。あるひは煙にむせびてたふれ伏し、或は炎にまぐれてたちまちに死しぬ。或は又わづかに身一つからくして遁れたれども、資財を取り出づるに及ばず。七珍萬寳、さながら灰燼となりにき。そのつひえいくそばくぞ。このたび公卿の家十六燒けたり。ましてその外は數を知らず。すべて都のうち、三分が二（一イ）に及べりとぞ。男女死ぬるもの數千人、馬牛のたぐひ邊際を知らず。人のいとなみみなおろかなる中に、さしも危き京中の家を作るとて寶をつひやし心をなやますことは、すぐれてあぢきなくぞ侍るべき。
