連続小説MIA (49) | Chapter Ⅲ

あてがわれた仕事内容は農地整理というものだった。詳しいことは現地で聞けと言われ、明日の朝5時にロビーに集合することになった。そこで晶馬が所属するグループは解散した。周りを見渡すと、他のワーカーたちはすでに思い思いに過ごしており、その雰囲気は学校かあるいは修学旅行の宿泊先のようだった。晶馬は、ようやく居場所が定まったような気がしていた。日本にいた時は仕事や学校に行かなくてはいけないことに対して、憂鬱になることもあった。明確な明日の予定を持っていることは、自分自身を束縛されることだと、そう思っていた。たしかにそうだろう。けれど、今の彼にとっては、行く先がある、ということがただ嬉しかった。その明日はきっと誰かと過ごす一日になる。彼は腹の方からふつふつと湧いてくる安堵感を噛みしめていた。ベッドと、風呂と、そして同じ環境のなかで労働を共にする仲間の存在。ただそれだけのことなのに、彼の目に映る世界はすこしだけ優しく変わったようだった。不思議なものだ。シティ・センター・バックパッカーでの初めての夜は、静かなものだった。21時には宿は暗闇に満たされた。それはルームメイトによって自主的に消灯されたもので、同室の全員がベッドで眠りにつこうとしている。ときおり、携帯電話のディスプレイが放つ仄かな光が見えるものの、誰も話しをするふうでもなく、外から聞こえる虫の音を除いては音はなく、静かな時間が流れている。晶馬はバックパックから、手元灯を探し出して、今日の出来事をノートに綴った。「バックパッカーに宿を見つける／明日の仕事をもらった／ひさしぶりのベッド」と書きつける。早い時間に起きられるように、アラームは携帯電話と卓上時計の両方に設定をする。

The job description I was assigned was to organize farmland. We were told to meet in the lobby at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to ask for more details. The group to which Shoma belonged disbanded there. Looking around, he saw that the other workers had already spent their time as they pleased, and the atmosphere was like that of a school or a school trip accommodation. Shoma felt as if he had finally found his place. When he was in Japan, he sometimes felt depressed about having to go to work or school. Having a definite schedule for tomorrow, he thought, would be a restraint on himself. It is true. But for him now, he was just happy to know that he had a place to go. Tomorrow would be a day to spend with someone else. He bit down on the relief that welled up in the pit of his stomach. A bed, a bath, and a fellow worker in the same environment. But the world in his eyes seemed to have changed in a slightly kinder way. It was a strange thing. My first night at City Center Backpacker was a quiet one; by 9:00 p.m. the inn was filled with darkness. The lights were voluntarily turned off by my roommates, all of whom were trying to fall asleep in their beds. No one seems to be talking, except for the occasional faint glow of a cell phone display, and no sound is heard except for the buzzing of insects from outside. Shoma searched in his backpack for a lamp and wrote down the day's events in a notebook. He writes, "Found lodging for backpackers / Got a job for tomorrow / First bed in a while." To make sure he wakes up early, he sets the alarm on both his cell phone and his alarm clock.
