イギリス生活4週目ふりかえり
イギリスに来てから1ヶ月が経った。
だいぶ現地の生活にも慣れて、生活リズムも整ってきたように感じる。そんな4週目を振り返っていく。
相変わらず長いし、英語の学習記録みたいな部分も長いので、適当に読み飛ばしてください!

1週間のスケジュール
◯土曜
土曜日は朝8時頃に起床。目覚ましをかけ忘れ、いつもより遅めの起床となってしまった。
身支度を済ませて朝食を食べていると、突然見知らぬ2人が家の中に入ってきた。
ホストファミリーの友達なのか、聞き慣れない言語で話をし始め、しばらくキッチン付近で長々とおしゃべりを続ける。
誰だかわからない人たちのおしゃべりを横目に、午前中はSIMカードの新調と、現地の銀行口座の開設に取り組む。
SIMカードはLebaraという企業を選んだ。
自分は、9ポンドで月20GBまで使えるプランで契約した。eSIMだと思って申し込んだのだが、物理的なSIMカードが届くスタイルだったため、少しめんどくさかった。
ちなみにeSIMとは以下のようなもののことだ。
圧倒的にeSIMの方が便利なので、本当はこちらにしたかったのだが、Lebaraはまだ対応していなかった。2024年中には対応するとのことなので、次年度はeSIMで契約したいと思う。
そしてもう一つ、自分が開設した銀行口座はこちら。いわゆるオンラインバンクというやつだ。
Monzoは、アプリのUIとUXが優れていて、とても使いやすい。契約する時も比較的条件が厳しくなく、開設しやすかった。
ネットやアプリで開設手続きをした後は、キャッシュカードが届くので、それをアプリに登録すれば手続き完了。自分の場合は二日ほどで届いた。
英語なので手続きで苦戦するところはあるものの、なんとか完了。その後は家でお弁当と飲み物を準備して、サッカーの試合に向けて出発。
以下のサイトを使うと、イギリスの至る所で行われているサッカーの試合に参加することができるのだ。
基本的には1時間で6ポンド(1000円弱)くらいが相場だが、それより安いことも、無料な場合もある。
体調管理のために体を動かしたいのと、現地の人たちと英語で交流するために定期的に参加するようにしている。
試合は1時間のはずだったのだが、ヒートアップして1時間半以上ぶっ続けで行われた。(お得だからありがたいけど)
試合では得点やアシストをいくつか重ねて調子が良かったのだが、最後の最後に悲劇が。
仲間からのスルーパスに抜け出してキーパーと一対一になった際、後ろからイギリス人の男性にスライディングタックルされた。。
普通にレッドカード級のファールで、両足の膝を打撲してめちゃめちゃ痛かった。。(しばし悶絶したが、三日ほど経ったら腫れは引いた。)
試合後は小腹が空いたため、クッキーと牛乳を食べる。イギリスでやたらと見かけるクッキー専門店に行ってみた。
本社はアメリカだそうで、お店の成り立ちも結構面白い。
こうした業態は他に見たことがないので、非常に興味深い。
その後はパブに移動。学校の講師が、現地の人と英語で交流するのに良いとオススメしてくれた場所だ。
雰囲気も居心地も良かったのだが、なんせ足が痛く、1時間ほどで帰ってしまった。
帰宅してからは、以下のnote記事を執筆。
ピッチ上の英語コミュニケーションがまだまだだなと感じたので、自分の学びも兼ねて、サッカー関連の用語をまとめた記事を作ってみた。

◯日曜
この日は朝7時に起床。
身支度を整えてからは、4月の支出などをチェックして、自分の家計簿を見直す時間を作った。
自分はお金の管理にマネーフォワードを使っており、個人口座、クレジットカード情報、事業用口座などを紐付けて管理している。
その際、いくつかのサブスクリプションサービスを使っていないことに気づいたので、思い切って全て解約した。
例えばAmazonプライムビデオなどは、日本から出て2週間ほど経つと、居住地設定のようなものを変更しないと視聴できなくなるのだ。
やり方は色々調べたのだが、なぜかうまくいかず、思い切って解約することにした。すると、四月に一度も使用していなかったため、年会費を払い戻してもらえることになった。
9時過ぎからは、イギリスで働くための準備として、Linkedinのアカウントを開設したり、CVを書いたりした。
お昼は博多ラーメン。こちらに来てから何度ラーメンを作ったことか。。インスタントではなく茹でるタイプのもので、2食分で3ポンド(600円)くらいだ。
日本だと高く感じるが、外食するよりはよっぽど安上がりだし、お店と同じくらい美味しい。
13時からは、学校の無料プログラムに参加。マンチェスターの市内観光プログラムで、ガイドの方が市内のスポットについて解説してくれる。
2時間ほどのツアーだったのだが、雨の多いマンチェスターでは珍しく、とても良い天気だった。英語と歴史の勉強になる。
マンチェスター市内には、ゴシック様式の伝統的な建物や、アメリカのリンカーン大統領の銅像、マンチェスターのシンボルであるハチの巨大な置物など、面白いスポットが数多く点在している。
ところで、リンカーン大統領やハチは、それぞれマンチェスターと何の関係があるか知っていますか?
どちらも面白いエピソードがあるので、いつか記事にしてまとめてみたいと思う。(アランチューリングも関係が深かったりする。)
その後は、ガイドの方に街のオススメスポットを教えてもらい、紹介されたパブに入ってみる。
その後はパブを移動し、マンチェスター・シティの試合を観戦。今回の試合は、攻守の切り替えが激しく、とても面白い試合だった。
対戦相手のノッティンガムは、縦に速い攻めを得意とするチームで、シンプルな裏へのロングボールや、ウィングの突破などでチャンスを作る。
シティは自分たちのペースを掴むために、ボールを回してペースを落とすのかなと思いきや、応戦するように縦に速い攻めも見せる。攻防が激しく、これぞ古き良きプレミアリーグといったような試合。
この試合で改めて上手さが際立っていたのが、以下のロドリ選手。
ちなみに、彼が出た試合は負けないという不敗神話的な記録も持っている。
巧みなインターセプトで相手の中盤の攻撃の目を潰し、時に試合のペースをコントロールし、隙を見て鋭い縦パスや、逆サイドへのロングボールを供給する。
特に、ロングボールをワンステップで蹴れることと、その軌道の美しさに驚かされる。展開の早い試合の中でも、そうした良さが際立って見えた。
試合はシティが2-0で勝利。
後半に選手とフォーメーションを入れ替えたのが功を奏し、息切れしかけていた相手の隙を突き、ゆったりとした繋ぎの中から中央を崩し、二点目を獲得して勝利した。

今回もロドリ選手の不敗神話記録が継続した形。
不敗神話といえば、今期歴史的な初優勝を飾り、今も無敗優勝に向かって劇的な試合を重ねているレバークーゼンというチームも紹介しておく。
今週の試合も凄まじい幕切れだった。
試合観戦から帰宅後は、途中だったLinkedIn のプロフィールとCVの作業を行う。夜中近くまでかかったが、どちらも完成。
ここから色々と修正はしていくが、一旦明日の朝に講師に見せて、フィードバックをもらう予定。

◯月曜
この日は朝6時に起床。身支度を整えて学校へ向かう。
今週から更に上のクラスに移籍することになったため、新しい生徒や講師と初めて顔を合わせることになる。
以前のクラスよりも周囲のスピーキングレベルが上がり、日常会話をそつなくこなす人が多い。非常に議論が活発なクラスだ。
授業内容は、先週の復習クイズとテスト。自分は先週まで別のクラスだったので、今ある知識で解くように求められた。
テストの内容は主に比較級を使った表現についてで、記憶を掘り起こしながら、なんとか8割正解することができた。テストの文法や単語のレベルなどが上がっているように感じる。
3コマ連続で授業をこなし、午後から有志の英会話のクラスに参加。テーマはスモールトークについて。スモールトークとは以下のようなもの。

上記例文は固すぎるように感じるのだが、こういったものがスモールトーク。ただ、現実の会話はもっとカジュアルで、くだらない話が多い。
カジュアルに話すことはある程度できるのだが、ウィットに富んだ会話や、ネイティブが良く使う表現を盛り込んだ会話はまだ全然できない。
アカデミックな会話より、日常会話の方が難しく感じる時もある。日常会話の表現なども今後に向けてまとめてみたい。
夕方からは、パブで行われる英語のクイズ大会に向かう。クイズのテーマはマンチェスターについて。合計30問くらいで幅広いテーマから出題される。
序盤はマンチェスター出身のアーティストについての問題などが出題され、正答率が低かった。しかし幸運なことに、サッカーについての問題が10問ほどあり、そこでポイントを稼いで優勝することができた笑
ちなみにマンチェスター出身の有名なアーティストがこちら。
オアシスだ。知っている方も多いのではないだろうか。ちなみに彼らの代表曲である「Wonderwall」は、マンチェスターシティのサポーターに愛されているそう。

この日は朝8時前に起床。
前日寝る前にスクリーンを見ていたので、寝つきが悪く、目覚めも悪かった。目覚めが悪いと朝から良いスタートを切れないので、改善したい。
身支度をした後は、今週の英語学習を振り返りつつ、note記事を執筆。
早めに学校に移動して、イギリスの仕事事情のリサーチを進める。調査を進める中で、いくつかの仕事はカバーレターが必要であることに気づく。

映画の評論文などを読みながら「Reporting words」を学んで使っていくのだが、時制を変化させたり、細かな注意点が色々とあり、地味にパッと変換するのに苦戦した。例えば以下のような例文がある。
地味に苦戦したので、授業後は、市内の図書館で復習をしつつ、明日までの課題を終わらせることにした。

友人に話したところ、イギリスの図書館には結構ネズミがいるとのこと。
20時からは、パブでチャンピオンズリーグ準決勝を観戦。
クロースのフィードと試合のコントロールの上手さ、ヴィニシウスの一瞬の抜け出し、バイエルンの両ウィングとケインの万能性、アンチェロッティの采配の上手さなど、見どころだらけの面白い試合だった。

夜は英語のライティング課題に取り組む。テーマは自分が最も好きな映画の評論文。

◯水曜
この日は朝7時に起床。 若干二度寝しかけたのだが、二度寝すると目覚めが悪くなるため気合いで起床。
今日は朝から夕方までビジネス英語が4コマ。
講師は4コマ連続で同じ人だったのだが、個人的に過去1レベルでインパクトのある講師だった。
やたらとテンションが高く、オーバーリアクションで、30秒に一回くらいのペースでジョークを挟んでくる。アメリカのコメディアンのような講師なのだが、イギリス出身とのこと。
更にはその講師に、俺のビジネス英語を4コマ取るなんてクレイジーだ!と面と向かって言われる。(自分の授業なのに)
授業の後半は、学んだフレーズを活かして、語学学校の来年度のビジネスプランを英語で話し合うという実践へと移る。
来年度売り上げを増やすためにはどうしたら良いかをチーム単位で議論し、習ったフレーズなどを取り入れながら結論を出さなければいけない。
まずは全体でアイデアをブレストした後、アイデアのメリットデメリットを起案者が説明し、合意が取れたらその案を講師に最終プレゼンする。
自分は語学学校内に小さなスーパーマーケットを作ることを提案した。周辺にスーパーやコンビニがなく、生活雑貨を購入するために市内中心部までバス移動している生徒を数多く知っていたからだ。
また、マンチェスターは雨が頻繁に降るので、雨具などが無くて困っている生徒なども良く見かけていた。
そうした点について言及しながら、初期投資が少なくて済むこと、需要が一定数あること、その他サービスと連携させてディスカウントなどを行う旨を何とか英語で説明したところ、その案が採択された。
ただでさえテーマが難しいのに、それを英語でやるというのはなかなかに骨が折れた。。ハードルはまだまだ高いなと思う。
授業後は図書館で授業の復習や課題を行う。
課題が残っていたので、20時からはチャンピオンズリーグを前半だけ見にいく。
帰宅後は課題を終わらせる。今日はビジネス英語が中心だったため、知らない単語や表現も多く、いつもより頭が疲れた。

本日は朝6時に起床。学校に向かって出発。
今日の授業テーマは、「Defining relative clause」(限定用法の関係詞節)と「Non-defining relative clause」(非限定用法の関係詞節)について。
英語でも非常に良く使う表現とのこと。高校時代の記憶が蘇ってきた。それぞれの使い方は以下。
これまた少し苦戦したのだが、何より一番苦戦するのは、こうした文法について英語で解説を受けることだ。形容詞、助動詞、関係詞などの文法用語に馴染みがないため、説明が入ってきにくい。
これは英語で授業を受ける時の躓きやすいポイントだと思う。
文法用語や文章理解に時間がかかると、授業でのリアクションにも時差ができるし、カフートなどの早押しクイズでも苦戦する。
そして、今週のクラスから、1週間に何度も宿題が出るようになった。そのため、3コマの授業後はランチを食べ、スターバックスで作業。
宿題とnote記事作成の時間に充てる。
その後は午後5時から1時間、現地のサッカーに参加。この日はコンディションが良くなく、全然動けなかった。
おそらく朝から食事をほぼ摂っていなかったので、栄養不足だと思う。。
その後はフランス人のクラスメイトに誘われ、イベントに向かう。色々な国籍の人が集まり、お互いの国の言語を交換し合うというイベントだ。
ちなみに友人は丁寧に住所を送ってくれたのだが、その住所が全く違う場所だった。そのため、10km以上離れたよく知らないレストランに一人で向かうという謎のミスが起きた笑
時間を大幅にロスしたが、移動中のバスで偶然友人たちと遭遇。一緒に会場へと向かう。
会場はおしゃれなパブで、映画にも出てきそうな店構え。
地下のフロアに向かうとたくさんの人がおり、入場料1ポンドを払って参加手続き完了。そこからは、様々な人と英会話を楽しむ。
世界中に住みながら歴史の教師をしている人。イギリスに住みながらもロシアで働くことを夢見る人。アプリケーション開発をしている人。前職の同僚に顔がめちゃめちゃ似ている人など、様々な出会いがあった。
そして同時に、やはり自分の英語はスペイン語圏の人に伝わりにくいことが多かった。国同士のアクセントの相性などもあるので、発音の重要性を感じるし、改善していきたい。
色々な国の英語と文化に触れることは、非常に学びになった。とても楽しかったので、また参加したい。今後も積極的に英語を話したり、人々と交流する機会を作れたらなと思う。
イギリスに来てから1番良い天気だったので、夜空も綺麗だった。美しい夜空と建物を眺めながら、この日は帰路に着いた。

この日は8時に起床。
午前中は洗濯や課題などをこなす。お昼前に学校に向けて移動。いつもとは違うルートのバスがあったため、それに乗って向かう。
お昼はレストランでアジアの料理をいただく。
お客さんが自分一人しかいなかったので、店員の人が色々と話しかけてきた。どこから来たのか、何しに来たのか、日本は良いところかなどなど、相手の質問が止まらない。
会話を楽しんでいると「これは僕からのプレゼントだよ」と飲み物を無料で提供してくれた。
いただいた料理もとても美味しく、またいつか来ようと思う。
ランチ後は学校に移動し、授業を2コマ。
授業は今週の復習に加え、プロジェクトの時間がメインだった。
地球環境を守るための啓蒙動画や作品を作るというもので、新しいクラスの生徒たちはメキシコのチチェン・イッツァをテーマにしていた。
マヤ文明の凄まじさも気になるのだが、それ以上にゴミを使って作られた作品のクオリティに感動した。。
動画編集をしている生徒からは、イギリスなどでもよく使われているツールや、データ転送サイトなどについても教えてもらった。
上記のファイル転送サイトは無料で使用でき、非常に便利だった。
授業後は新しいクラスメイトとの交流も兼ねて、近場のパブへ向かう。特にコロンビア出身の生徒が多い。
さらにその後、パブでの別の交流会に参加するためにバス移動。自分一人で参加したのだが、会場に着いても誰もいない笑
こちらに来てから度々遭遇する、スタッフ遅刻や情報伝達エラーのようだ。
しばらくうろうろしていると、同じようにうろうろしているフランス人が話しかけてきた。
どうやら彼も同じイベントに参加する予定だったそうで、コロンビア人の友人と参加者を探していたらしい。
仕方がないので3人でパブの店長に状況を確認すると、地図に載っているパブの住所が間違っているのではないかとのこと。
ということで、そこから徒歩10分ほどの別のパブに移動する。(だいぶ場所間違えてるけど。。)
パブで、フランスのこと、日本のこと、コミュニケーションの取り方の違い、お互いのキャリアのことなどを話す。
日本のアニメファンとのことで、日本語もいくつか知っていた。特にBLEACHが好きだそうだ。
こちらに来てから、BLEACHファンに遭遇することが多い。フランスでの日本のアニメや漫画の人気の高さを再確認させられた。
しばらく話していると、別の参加者がいるパブの場所が判明し、そちらに移動することに。2軒目も良い雰囲気で、食べ物もとても美味しかった。
フランス人の友人は非常にコミュニケーション能力が高く、バーテンダーや、そこら辺の人にも声をかけまくる。
その結果、自分たちのテーブルに人だかりができることになり、現地の人とも色々な話をすることができた。
こうした現地の人にも積極的に絡んでいくスタイルは見習いたい。現地の人も、その方が英語が上達すると言っていた。
とても充実した時間を過ごし、バスを乗り継いで1時間くらいかけて帰路に着いた。

印象的だったこと
・発音の改善が必須
以前も書いたが、国ごとのアクセントや発音の違いによって、英語の伝わりやすさの相性などがある。自分の英語はスペイン語圏の人に伝わりにくい。あとはRの音が苦手。
個人的にはインド人、フランス人、イタリア人の英語が聞き取りにくかったりする。発音の改善と合わせて、色々な国の人の英語に慣れておくことは重要だと改めて感じた。
・スピーキングの伸びが遅い
リスニングやリーディングに比べて、スピーキングの伸びが遅い気がする。複雑な構文などになると口から発話するのに苦戦する。受動的なリスニングと比べて、能動的な分、アウトプット量が足りていないかなと思う。
・ストック型の勉強とフロー型の勉強
ストック型の勉強とは、単語やフレーズの音読、反復などを意図している。言語は体に染み込ませていくようなイメージだなと改めて感じたし、スポーツの基礎練に似ている。基礎練をもっと増やさないといけないかも。
英語に触れる絶対量を増やすという点では、日々ニュースを聞いたりするフロー型の勉強も良いけど、血肉となるのはストック型かなと思う。

この違いが良くわからなかったので以下にまとめてみる。ただし、ネイティブの人にもしっかり聞いてみようと思う。

今週は、それなりに挫折を感じた週だったため、ふりかえりが英語の授業の話ばかりになってしまった。
英単語やフレーズのレベルも上がり、授業で積極的に発言しようにも、英語が瞬間的に出てこないことも多かった。
とはいえ、言語学習は地道な積み重ねだと思うので、改善しつつもあまり気にし過ぎず、モチベーションを落とさずやっていきたい。
