震災から10年。レディー・ガガからのメッセージ

今日は2021年3月11日。

2011年の東日本大震災からちょうど10年です。

被災されたすべての方へ、深く哀悼の意を表します。

そんな今日は、震災について海外から送られたメッセージについて取り上げていきたいと思います。

リスニングの練習にもなると思ったので、スクリプトに起こしてみました。

Hi, Japan! This is Lady Gaga.

It seems like yesterday that I was watching the shocking footage of the devastating earthquake and tsunami on the news, and thinking what can I do to help. I remember making a lot of phone calls that day. 

Through the years seeing and hearing about the vast recover of your beautiful cities, I have so much respect to the people of Japan for your strength, kindness, and love for each other.

I think it gives hope to the people now that are fighting through the Corona pandemic all around the world.
However, I can also imagine that there are still many people fighting through the pain emotionally and mentally.

So, let’s all continue to support each other.

Be kind to each other and love each other.

I’m always praying for you, Japan, for a better world.

We still living in difficult time with the corona virus. Please take care of yourself and be kind to yourself and to the people around you. 

I look forward to coming back to Japan, soon.

なんて聞き取りやすいんでしょう。感動しました。

ところどころ取り上げていくことにします。

表現を取り上げていきます

“It seems like yesterday that SV”

日本語に「昨日のことのようだ」という表現がありますが、英語でも同じようです。こうやって言語が違えど同じ考え方でできている表現を見かけると興味深く感じます。

“footage“

▶︎映像、(映画；ビデオなどの）一連のシーン

“devastating”

▶︎破壊的な、荒廃させる　cf. *devastate(破壊する、荒廃させる、打ちのめす)

*When I lost my grandfather, I was devastated by grief. (鉄壁例文より。人に対しても使えるんですね。)

“vast recover”

“vast”は“a vast extent of land” というように「広大な」という意味で使われることが多いですがここでは「多大な」という訳が当てはまるでしょうか。ともかく「デカい」というイメージがあれば良いと思います。　“recover”は名詞と動詞があります。今回はもちろん名詞。

“strength”

発音記号は stréŋ(k)θ 。ガガの発音に注目です！

“Corona pandemic”

日本語では「コロナ禍」という言葉が一般にも浸透しましたが、英語圏では「パンデミック」が一般的なようです。日本でも耳にすることがありますよね。感染症の蔓延、流行という意味です。

“emotionally and mentally”

▶︎「感情的にも精神的にも」

“Let’s all continue to support”

=let us all continue to support　　“all”は”we all”、「私たち全員」ということでしょう。

“I’m praying for you”

直訳は「私はあなたのために祈っています」。宗教的な意味合いというより、相手への思いを言い表すためによく用いられます。東日本大震災の際は、世界から支援・応援の意味合いを込めて「Pray for Japan」というキャッチフレーズが生まれました。Twitterでも#prayforjapan で多くの投稿がされています。

ガガのメッセージは「お互い優しくあろう」という思いと、「愛しています」で締められています。震災が起こった際から日本への支援を行なっていたガガ。動画を見るとその思いを今でも持ち続けてくれていることに、なんだかありがたいような気がします。
