High- and Low-context Culture

みなさんこんにちは。
Hello guys.

いつも一緒にいるバイリンガルの友だちが仕事のため、今日から2日間1人で過ごします。
I’m staying alone until tomorrow because my bilingual friend who had been always together went away for work.

コンドミニアムからTreadまでUberタクシーで行きました。
I took a Uber cab from our condominium to Tread.

昨日ブルペンで投げたので、今日はノースローでウェイトトレーニングのみです。
Today, I had a lifting workout without throwing, because I threw a bullpen yesterday.

従業員のジュリアンとサウナに入る予定でしたが、残念ながら入れませんでした。
I was planning to take the sauna with Tread’s employee Julian, but unfortunately we couldn’t do that.

次、ブルペンで投げたあと入ろうって話になっています。
We are planning to go into the sauna after my next bullpen session.

さて、今日のnoteはハイコンテクスト文化とローコンテクスト文化について書きます。
Now today, I’ll write about High-context and Low-context cultures.

ハイコンテクスト文化の人たちは、言葉よりコンテクスト(文脈)に頼ったコミュニケーションをとります。
High-context cultures communicate depending on context than words.

会話の流れや相手の気持ちを読むことが求められます。
They need to read conversation flows and other’s minds.

日本人はまさにハイコンテクスト文化です。
The Japanese belong to a truly High-context culture.

一方、ローコンテクスト文化の人たちは、とにかく言葉を大切にします。
On the other hand, Low-context cultures value words.

シンプルで明確なコミュニケーションが求められます。
They need to communicate simply and clearly.

アメリカ人はローコンテクスト文化です。
Americans belong to a Low-context culture.

最近英語を勉強してる僕は、この違いをかなり感じています。
Recently while learning English, I definitely feel this difference between High-context culture and Low-context culture.

そういえば、以前のnoteで「英語はシンプルだ」ということを書きましたね。
Come to think of it, I had written “English is simpler” in my previous note.

その違いのせいで、僕は英語を話す(書く)ときに時間がかかってしまっているんだと気づきました。
I realized that because of this difference, it took me longer to speak or write in English.

とにかく短くてシンプルな言葉を使うように意識しています。
I try to consciously use shorter and simpler words and phrases as much as possible.

そして、この文化の違いはスポーツにも見られるんじゃないかと思っています。
And I think these cultural differences appear in the case of sports as well.

ピッチングフォームやピッチデザインなどを英語で話していると、言葉1つ1つにとても力がこもっているように感じました。
When talking about my delivery form and pitch design with coaches/others, even word is powerful and seems to have deep meaning.

彼らともっとコミュニケーションをとれるようになりたいです。
I want to be able to communicate with them well.

そのために、この英語noteをはじめました。
That’s why I started this English note.

少しずつ、そして確実に取り組んでいきます。
I will be working on this little by little and patiently.
