京都人の密かな愉しみ：2024年9月4日（水）
『京都人の密かな愉しみ』（2015年1月から2017年5月まで，2017年9月から2022年5月までの2つのシリーズでNHK BSプレミアムで不定期に放送されたNHKエンタープライズ制作のテレビドラマ）をご覧になられたことはあるだろうか。京都をこよなく愛する人たちの間では，とても人気の高いテレビドラマのひとつである。残念ながら，2022年5月に終了してしまった。
各回でそれぞれがひとつの話となっている。そして，各回の冒頭で必ず同じようなナレーションが挿入されている。英国ヨークシャー出身の文化人類学者の洛志社大学教授エドワード・ヒースロー役を演じる団時朗が語る言葉が，何とも言えない独創的な雰囲気を醸し出していて，各回で繰り広げられるそれぞれの京都人ならではのエピソードを象徴的に引き立たせている。文化人類学者のヒースロー教授から「頭の先から爪先まで京都人であるこの人は最高のサンプルだ」と研究対象として絶賛された，老舗和菓子屋「久楽屋春信」の若女将，沢藤三八子役を演じる常盤貴子の京都人らしい演技も興味深い。はじめのほうのシリーズでは，以下の一節が登場する。
「京都は美しい しかし 京都人はわからない」
しかしながら，誠に残念なことに，2023年3月22日に団時朗が74歳の若さで逝去された。団時朗と言えば，私たちの世代では，小学生時代によく観ていた「帰ってきたウルトラマン」（1971年）で主人公の郷秀樹役を演じていたことで記憶している人が多いだろう。
私個人としては，『京都人の密かな愉しみ』のうち，まだ，京都人の作法編，縁結び編，秋から冬の味覚編，代替わり編しか観ていない。他の作品もぜひ観てみたいと思っている。
「われわれを惹きつけてやまない
このまちの魔法の源泉はなにか
それは人である」
この団時朗のセリフを，もう一度，聴いてみたい。
なお，『京都人の密かな愉しみ』の主題歌「京都慕情」は，彼の有名なアメリカのロックバンドのザ・ベンチャーズによる作詞・作曲（1970年）で，同年に渚ゆう子が日本語でカバーした歌である。
The Kyotoites' Secret Amusements: Wednesday, September 4, 2024
Have you ever watched "The Kyotoites' Secret Amusements," a TV drama produced by NHK Enterprises and broadcast intermittently on NHK BS Premium from January 2015 to May 2017, and from September 2017 to May 2022 in two separate series? This show is extremely popular among those who deeply love Kyoto. Unfortunately, it concluded in May 2022.
Each episode stands as a self-contained story, and at the beginning of each one, a similar narration is always inserted. The narration is delivered by Jiro Dan, who plays the role of Edward Heathrow, a cultural anthropologist from Yorkshire, England, and a professor at Rakushisha University. His words create an indescribably unique atmosphere, symbolically enhancing the Kyotoite-specific episodes that unfold in each story. The performance of Takako Tokiwa, who plays Miyako Sawafuji, the young proprietress of the long-established Japanese confectionery shop Kurakuyaharunobu, and who is praised by Professor Heathrow as 'the perfect specimen of a Kyoto native, from head to toe,' is also fascinating for its portrayal of a quintessential Kyotoite. In the early part of the series, the following passage appears.
'Kyoto is beautiful. But the people of Kyoto are hard to understand.'
Regrettably, Jiro Dan passed away on March 22, 2023, at the young age of 74. For our generation, many may remember him as the actor who played Hideki Gō, the protagonist in "Return of Ultraman" (1971), a show we often watched as elementary school students.
Personally, I have only watched the episodes of The Kyotoites' Secret Amusements: that cover the Kyoto Way of Life, Matchmaking, Autumn to Winter Delicacies, and the Changing of Generations. I would like to watch the other episodes as well.
I want to hear that line from Jiro Dan again:
'What is the source of the magic that irresistibly draws us to this town?
It is the people.'
The theme song of 'The Kyotoites' Secret Amusements (Kyotojin no Hisokana Tanoshimi),' 'Kyoto Bojo,' was written and composed by the famous American rock band The Ventures in 1970 and was covered in Japanese by Yuko Nagisa in the same year.
