暴力で民主主義を萎縮させてはならない：2024年7月14日（日）
13日午後6時過ぎに，アメリカ東部ペンシルベニア州で共和党選挙集会で演説中のドナルド・トランプ前大統領が，何者かに銃撃され，銃弾が右耳上部を貫通し怪我をした。容疑者はシークレットサービスにより，即座に殺害されたということである。真相は闇に消えた。
日本では，今回の銃撃事件を受けて，2年前の2022年7月8日に，奈良市の近鉄大和西大寺駅北口で参議院選挙の選挙応援演説中に銃撃殺害された安倍晋三元首相の事件を，誰もが想い起こしたに違いない。
暴力で民主主義を萎縮させてはならない。今回の銃撃事件を見て，あらためて思ったことは，シークレットサービスの対応の違いについてである。日本では，よほどの状況でない限り，容疑者を問答無用でその現場で殺害することは滅多にない。事件の真相を解明する情報が消えてしまうからである。しかし，その一方で，日本では，今回のケースとは違い，最悪の事態を回避することができなかった。
どちらが重要か。それは事件が起きた瞬間に判断できるような代物ではない。しかし，初動態勢は両者で大きく異なり，それによって結果が大きく異なる可能性がある。政治家の護衛にあたっては，問答無用で容疑者を射殺する初動態勢の可否について，守るべきもの，最優先すべきものは何かに焦点を当てて，日本で一度議論して欲しい。

On the evening of the 13th, shortly after 6 PM, former President Donald Trump was shot while speaking at a Republican campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear, causing an injury. The suspect was immediately killed by the Secret Service. The truth has disappeared into the darkness.
In Japan, this shooting incident undoubtedly reminded everyone of the incident on July 8, 2022, when former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while giving a campaign speech near Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara City during the House of Councillors election.
Violence must not be allowed to stifle democracy. Reflecting on this recent shooting incident, I am reminded of the difference in the Secret Service's response. In Japan, it is extremely rare for a suspect to be killed on the spot without question unless the situation is extremely dire. This is because crucial information that could uncover the truth of the incident might be lost. However, on the other hand, unlike in this case, Japan was unable to avoid the worst outcome.
Which is more important? This is not something that can be judged in the moment an incident occurs. However, the initial response differs greatly between the two, and this can lead to significantly different outcomes. In terms of protecting politicians, there needs to be a discussion in Japan about the pros and cons of an initial response that includes the option of shooting suspects without question, focusing on what should be protected and prioritized.
