My father and I had probably never talked alone together before. For me, it was like talking to the 17th or 18th person behind the mirrors.

Dad always had his back to me. The shiny, cheap voice of the night baseball game broadcast coming from the cathode ray tube seemed to be aimed only at the black full moon that might be hovering between me and my father.

"Dad,"

As far as I listened, the voice I uttered didn't sound like my voice.

"yeah."

Dad's voice was weak, and it disappeared as soon as it slipped into the gaps between the rushes on the tatami mat, following the flow of gravity.

“There are no more trains for today.”

"yeah."

"Can you please take me to the station tomorrow?"

Dad was pounding his fist on the tatami mat. Maybe it was aimed at the Giants' rookie batter, who struck out with two outs and the bases loaded.

"Yeah."

It was the first time I heard my father say those two words.

I returned to my room, sat down with a piece of writing paper decorated with cherry blossom petals, and tried writing letters to the rest of my family. But I couldn't even write out the first two letters.

Of course, we didn't exchange a single word during the car ride to the station building at midnight.

I still remember the feeling of my father's eyes as he looked at me on the train, so clear that I could cup them in my palm. It clearly captured my heart, never letting go, and remained there until it disappeared into the darkness.

As time passed on the train, I suddenly looked at my palm through the train's fluorescent lights. I felt very helpless. And the frivolity of the ugly, bulging baggage on the seat next to me filled me with unbearable embarrassment.

The train window glass next to my cheek slowly sucks away my body heat. I was gazing at my own reflection in the window glass and the pure white, bright full moon floating above it.
