Lady Windermere’s Fan, Oscar Wilde

・厳格なピューリタン派のLady Windermereと、言葉巧みに惑わそうとするLord Darlington。Darlingtonは、ドリアングレイにおけるヘンリー卿を思わせる。Mrs. ErlynneとLord Windermereが不倫関係にあると疑ったLady Windermere、しかし、Mrs. ErlynneはLady Windermereの母であった。

・duches of berwick saying to lord darlington “I won’t let you know my daughter, you are far too wicked” is astonishing lol. やはり、ヘンリー卿の要素はあるように思う。しかしながら、Lady Windermereに恋をして、物語の後半では人が変わったように、善いことしか言わなくなった。このbad→goodへの変化がおもしろい。

・Mrs.Erlynne living in Mayfair reminds me of Dorian Grey having a habit of visiting Mayfair. Seems like Mayfair in Oscar Wilde has some nuances of sexuality.

・Mrs. Windermere’s remark “to tell it is to to live through it all again. Actions are the first tragedy in life, words are the second” is well said, in regret to her visit to Lord Darlington. This is so true in life.

・Lady Windermereのconcluding remarkは、物語の中で頻出していたgoodとbadの境界が、実は曖昧であることを言っている。”There is the same world for all of us, and good and evil, sin and innocence [...]. To shut one’s eye to half of life that one may live securely is as though one might walk with more safety in a land of pit and precipice.” Lady Windermereのgood->bad->goodへの変化、Darlingtonのbad->good、Mrs. Erlynneのbad->goodへの変化、など興味深い。一方で、Lord Windermereは、不倫の疑いでthought to be bad->accepted as goodという変化はあるが、本質的にgoodであり続け、badの側面を持たずに変化していない点も面白い。こうした世界観は、幸福の王子や柘榴の家などのワイルドの童話にも通ずる。「思いやり」と「身勝手」は単純な対立項として存在するのではなく、花屋のハンスのような「無意味な思いやり」や、「思いやりの皮を被った身勝手」が存在することを示している。ヘッセのデミアンでも、この世の悪に目を背けることは、世界の半分を無視することであると言われていた。
