One day in 1759, a music teacher , started giving music lessons to his daughter.  The girl was seven years old.  Her name was Maria Anna, but everyone called her Nannerl.  Her father's name was Leopold. He was one of the best violin players in the city, and he hoped that his daughter would someday become a musician, too.

Leopold showed her an instrument called a clavier. It was played by many people before the piano became popular. Soon Nannerl could play better than many adults.

When Nannerl was eight years old, her brother Wolfgang watched her lessons.  He loved his sister very much. He wanted to do everything she did, so he wanted to play the clavier, too.

Everyone thought that he was too young for music because he was only three years old. However, Leopold was happy when his children were doing things together, so he let him play the
clavier.

Suddenly, Wolfgang began to play some of the chords that his sister was practicing. Everyone could not t believe it, and they didn't know why a little boy like him could play the clavier so well.  There was something very , strange and special about this young boy.

In 1761, Wolfgang learned to play his first piece of music.  Leopold taught him how to play a minuet, and young Wolfgang was able to play it perfectly. He was only four years old, and it took him just 30 minutes to learn the minuet!
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a child genius.  He became a great musician and composer.
