Medical authorities in Wuhan, central China, have confirmed a jump in the number of cases of a mystery viral pneumonia outbreak to 44 from the 27 reported on Tuesday. It came as Hong Kong health authorities said two people who had recently visited Wuhan had been admitted to hospital with suspected pneumonia.

Eleven of the Wuhan patients were in “serious condition”, the Wuhan health authority said, amid concerns that the virus may have been transmitted from animals.

A further 121 people in Wuhan who had been in close contact with the infected patients had been placed under medical observation, the authority said. It was continuing to trace others who had been in close contact with the infected people.

The Hong Kong Hospital Authority said that by noon on Friday, public hospitals had admitted two female patients, aged 12 and 41, who had been to Wuhan in the previous 14 days and presented with fever and respiratory infections or pneumonia symptoms.

Wuhan health commission said on Friday the origin of the viral pneumonia outbreak remained unknown. It said investigations had so far ruled out common flu, avian flu, adenovirus infection and other common respiratory diseases. More laboratory tests and investigations were under way.

The authority added that so far there was no proof of human-to-human transmission, nor had any medical staff contracted the illness. It said some of the patients were stallholders of the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, but did not elaborate on the backgrounds of other patients.

Wuhan authorities ordered the closure of the market on Wednesday amid reports that it had also sold other wildlife including birds and rabbits.

Dr Gauden Galea, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) representative in China, said in a statement on Thursday that the Wuhan municipal health commission had “isolated cases, initiated contact tracing and made further efforts to prevent the spread of disease”. A national expert team had been deployed to Wuhan on Tuesday, he said.

“There are many potential causes of this type of illness and further laboratory tests are ongoing to determine the cause of the disease,” Galea said. “At this point, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) coronavirus is not yet confirmed or excluded as the cause of the outbreak.”

The 2002-03 Sars epidemic infected more than 5,300 people and killed 349 in mainland China. In Hong Kong, 1,750 people were infected and 299 died.

According to the WHO, the Sars coronavirus is thought to be an animal virus from an as-yet-uncertain animal reservoir, perhaps bats, that spread to other animals and first infected humans in Guangdong, near Hong Kong, in late 2002.

The Hong Kong health authority added that both patients were being treated in isolation in Princess Margaret Hospital, and said it had reported the cases and sent specimens to the city’s department of health for testing.

“The patients concerned are in stable condition,” Dr Raymond Lai, the hospital authority’s chief infection control officer, said.

“A preliminary investigation shows that both patients had not been to a wet market in Wuhan before the onset of symptoms. The [hospital authority] will keep monitoring the patients’ conditions and provide appropriate treatment.”

The latest cases took the total number of patient cases in Hong Kong to five, with two of them having been discharged.
