Weekly question #34 What do you do when you are facing adversity?

This is my article about weekly question from 英語手帳 2024. The theme in July is "Learn from historical figures" （歴史上の人物から学ぶ）.




Weekly question: What do you do when you are facing adversity?

It's important to stay calm when you are facing adversity. I had trouble with my car on the event day last December. I was in panic first, but I became calm by talking with my husband how I could go to the nursery home in a different way.

The following article is about the event and I just wrote the result of what had happened on the day. If you're interested, I appreciate you for reading it.

It was probably about 15 minutes until I could decide to take the train instead of driving my car. My car had a flat tire, so I asked the gas station nearby to fix it. My husband took care of my car for me and also drove me to the station with his car. 

I could have tried to drive my husband's car myself, but he needed it and I wasn't used to driving his car. In addition, it was better to use the train if I could get on the right time. Or else, I would be in a hurry driving and be frustrated to reach the venue. Driving would be a stress for me at that time.

As a result, I reached the venue safely by train. Actually, one of my erhu's group member picked me up at the station nearby the nursery home. As I had mentioned in the article above, the event also went well.

逆境に立たされたとき、あなたはどうしますか？

自分では手に負えないと思うようなことが起こることもありますよね。突然、予期していない時に、起こると、さらにパニックになって、慌ててしまうこともあります。

まず、何か起こった時には、自分を落ち着かせて、冷静に判断できるように、心がけています。そうすると、本当に何をすべきかが、見えてきます。

英語でも書いたように、昨年12月に、ニ胡仲間と老人ホームで演奏する日に、トラブルが起こりました。私の車のタイヤがパンクしちゃったんです！

見た瞬間、何度見かして、はぁ、やっぱりパンクしてるわぁと、大慌て。もう出発しようっていう時でした。回れ右して、夫に相談。どうしようって、パニックになってましたが、話してるうちに、落ち着いてきました。夫も家にいる日でよかったです。一人だったら、慌てまくった挙げ句、イベントに向かうことをあきらめてたかもしれません。

電車で行くことにしましたが、実際、夫がいなければ、行けなかったと思います。電車の本数も、田舎なので、少ないという状況だけでなく、最寄り駅までが遠いんです。しかも特急に乗るためには、車で15分もかかる駅にいかなきゃいけない。

会場にいく為に、間に合う電車に乗れること。夫がいたので、車のトラブル対処も任せられたし、駅までもスムーズに夫に送ってもらえたこと。目的地の最寄り駅にも、ニ胡仲間に迎えにきてもらえたこと。

なんというか、全てのパズルのピースがはまったような感じで、一つ一つうまくいったことで、私はあの時、会場に行けたんだなと改めて思いました。

トラブルが起きても、落ち着いて対処できただけでなく、色々な助けがあったんですね。
