【東京みち散歩物語】#4 TOKYO street stroll story in Nagatacho

I woke up in the morning at a business hotel in Akasaka, and after having a buffet breakfast, I decided to check out and head towards Sannozaka via Hie Shrine. After yesterday's journey of history and faith in Akasaka, I decided to head to Nagatacho. It is a short walk from Akasaka to Nagatacho. The House of Representatives building stands on both sides of the uphill slope of Sannozaka. Nagatacho is the center of Japanese politics, where the Diet building and political party headquarters are located.

After climbing Sannozaka, I came out onto the street of the Prime Minister's Official Residence. This is the back side of the Diet building. When I arrived in Nagatacho, I decided to first visit the Diet building, and walked around the building counterclockwise. When I came to the front of the Diet building, the imposing building symbolized the very center of Japanese politics. As I walked around the Diet building, I noticed that the security on the premises was very strict. There is a patrol car stationed at the front gate of the Diet building, and police officers are checking for suspicious people. Of course, they don't question me, an ordinary tourist, unnecessarily. But it is the heart of the country. In the midst of the heavy atmosphere, I happened to take a break and went to a small park in front of the Diet building to the right. This park is called the National Diet Front Yard.

As I sat down on a bench in a corner of the park and took a rest for a while, I suddenly heard a low voice talking from the shade of a nearby tree. I listened carefully and it was the voices of two men who seemed to be members of parliament.

"If this information leaks, it will be a big problem."

"Don't worry. Everything is going according to plan. All evidence has been disposed of."

I instinctively stiffened up and approached the shade of the tree to listen to their conversation. It seems that they are trying to hide some serious wrongdoing. My heart was beating fast and my whole body was tense. Just as I was about to listen in more detail to what they were talking about, I was suddenly called out from behind.

"What are you doing?"

I turned around and saw a man in a suit, like a bodyguard, standing there, not the man who seemed to be the congressman I had just been talking to. He looked at me with a stern expression. Thinking that I had to make an excuse, I quickly answered, "Oh, I was just taking a walk," but his eyes were full of doubt.

"This is a restricted area. Please leave," he said coldly.

I left the place and returned to the main street of Nagatacho. The conversation from earlier echoed in my mind, and the fear that I had seen something great and dark spread.

After that, I went into the cafe in the National Diet Library next to the National Diet Building and ordered a coffee to calm down. From the window of the cafe, I could see the National Diet Building in the distance. I ruminated in my mind about what I had witnessed. There may be many secrets in the world of politics that we do not know about.

As I drank my coffee, I made a decision. I would not waste this experience and would find out what was going on. Maybe the truth hidden in that darkness was something important that I should know.

The incident in Nagatacho was the catalyst that led my walking trip in a new direction. I thought that by getting to know the inside and outside of this town, I might be able to get closer to many truths about the city of Tokyo. However, I had no idea at the time that this idea would later become embroiled in an unexpected turn of events.
