英語を探せ#17-リンカーン大統領のゲティスバーグの演説

　日常の常識や行動を、違った観点で見直すような英語を探しています。16代大統領リンカーンのGettysburg’s address”「ゲティスバーグの演説1863年11月19日」はアメリカのシンボルです。”He preserved the American Union during the Civil War and proved the world that democracy can be a lasting from of government.”「彼は南北戦争中にアメリカの連邦体制を維持し、民主主義が政府の存続可能形であることを世界に示した」と言われています。しかし21世紀初頭での欧米諸国の衰退と強権国家の台頭や、米国政治の混乱を見たとき、民主主義は効率の悪い政治形態かもしれないと心配になります。米国の原点を見るためにこの演説を勉強してみました。
　“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”「87年前、私たちの先祖は、新しい国家をこの大陸に生み出しました。それは『自由』を掲げ、すべての人間は平等に創造されているという理念です」。Scoreは20の意味です。
“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”「今、私たちは大規模な内戦の中にいて、この国そういった理想や理念を持つ国が長く耐えられるかどうかを試しています」。
　“We are met on a great battle–field of that war.” 「私たちはこの内戦の大きな戦場に集まりました」。
　“We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.”「この国の存続のために、ここで命を捧げた人々の最後の安息の地として、その戦場の一部を墓地とするために私たちは集まりました」。
　“It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.”「私たちがこれを行うべきなのは全く適切で妥当なことです」。
　“But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate ― we can not consecrate ― we can not hallow ― this ground.” 「しかし、より広い意味で、私たちは奉献し、神聖なもの、聖なるものとすることはできません」。”dedicate, consecrate, hallow”は理解が難しいですね。内戦での死者を弔い顕彰することと思います。
　“The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.“ 「ここで戦った勇敢な人々は、生者も死者も含めて、追加したり差し引いたりする私たちの貧弱な力をはるかに超えて、この地を神聖なものとしました」。
　“The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” 「世界は私たちがここで言ったことにほとんど注目せず、長く覚えていないでしょう。しかし彼らがここで行ったことを決して忘れることはありません」。
　“It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”「むしろ、私たち生者は、ここで戦った彼らが気高く進めた未完の仕事に専念することが大切です」。
　“It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us”「むしろ、私たちがここで私たちの前に残された、以下のような大きな任務に専念することです」。
　“- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion”「つまり、これらの名誉ある死者たちから、彼らがここで最後の全面的な献身を捧げたその大義に対して、私たちがさらに献身的に取り組むということです」。
“- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain”「彼らの死は無駄にしないことを決意することです」。
“ - that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom”「神のもとでこの国が『自由』の新たな誕生を迎えることです」。
“- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”「そして人民の人民による人民のための政府が地上から滅びないためです」。
