May 8, 2023: Notre Dame Fire, Restoration Work, Digital Technology （ノートルダム大聖堂の火災、修復工事、デジタル技術）
It has been about four years since the Notre Dame fire in Paris, France. I saw the news about the restoration work of the cathedral on TV a few days ago. The work seems to be on track. The work is expected to end in five years. But I have a doubt about it. It seems to me that five years is too short. Usually, it must need more time to restore such a historic building. But it may not be impossible. It is thanks to new technologies. The most important is digital technology.
What surprised me the most is that before the fire, an expert had studied the structure of the Notre Dame Cathedral with digital technology. He was Andrew Tallon, a Belgian art historian. He had digitised the detailed structure of the building in 2015. At the time, he must have done it just for academic study and never imagined a fire. But the data is playing an important role in the restoration work. It helps to facilitate the work. Some of the technology can be seen in an AFP YouTube video. However, Dr Tallon died young. He lost his life at the age of forty-nine. I really hope that his great work will make the restoration end in five years.
フランスのノートルダム大聖堂の火災から4年が経過しました。先日、修復工事に関するニュースをテレビで見ました。工事は着々と進んでいるようです。修復は5年終わらせることを目指しているようですが、あの大火災からそんな短期間で修復できるのかという疑問はいまだに残っています。普通、歴史建造物の修復にはもっと時間がかかるはずです。でも、新しい技術の不可能とういうことはなさそうです。その中でも、一番重要なのがデジタル技術です。
驚くべきことに、火災前に、大聖堂の構造をデジタル技術で詳しく分析していた人がいたのです。ベルギー出身のアンドリュー・タロン博士という美術史家の方が、2015年に大聖堂の構造を3Dスキャンでデジタル化していたのです。その当時は、デジタル化は学術目的で行われ、大聖堂が火災に遭うなんて想像もされていなかったともいます。でも、このデータが修復工事に大きな役割を果たしており、修復が容易になっているようです。博士は残念ながら、49歳の若さで亡くなっていますが、このデータを使って、修復が5年で終了するのを願うばかりです。
