June 3, 2022: Foreign Tourists, Happenings, Communication Tools without Talking （外国人観光客、ハプニング、話をせずに対話する方法）

 When the bus stopped at a stop, a foreign visitor rushed to the driver with a map. He pointed out a location on the map to the driver and said something. But his language was neither Japanese nor English. The driver did not understand the language but managed to imagine what the visitor wanted to say. And he used gestures to give some advice to the visitor. He spent about five minutes on it. He seemed to be used to such happenings. But I was afraid that it might mentally affect him.
 When I travel to a foreign country where Japanese or English is not understood, I prepare for it carefully. I always try to find the best tool to convey what I want to say to station staff and taxi drivers without talking with them.

　そのバスが停留所に時に突然、外国人観光客がバスの運転手さんの所に駆け寄ってきたのです。そして、地図を広げ、指で場所を指して、運転手さんに何か話しているのです。運転手さんは、言葉は分からなかったようですが、言いたいことは理解したようで、す。身振り手振りで、教えてあげていました。この間、約5分でした。運転手さんはこうしたことに慣れているようで、苦もなく対応していました。でも、精神的な負担は非常に大きいと感じました。
ボクは英語が通じない外国に行く場合は、入念な準備をします。特に、電車やタクシーを使って移動する際に、駅員やドライバーとできるだけ言葉を交わす回数を少なく、かつボクの言いたいことが確実に伝わる方法を探します。
