May 1, 2023: Currency Sign, It's often difficult to see what's under your nose. （通貨記号、灯台下暗し）
The other day, I was talking with my wife. Then, a proverb suddenly came to my mind. It was ‘it's hard to see what is under your nose’. We were talking about a scam on an online shopping site. It caused some users to waste a lot of money due to a misleading sign. The site showed the prices in numbers and the symbol of '￥' only. So it was natural for the users to think that the prices on the site were in Japanese yen. But it was wrong. The sign meant Chinese yuan instead of Japanese yen. And the users had been unaware that the same currency sign is used for both currencies. As a result, the exchange rate between the two currencies made the users billed about twenty times as much as in Japanese yen. When I talked about it with my wife, I found out that she did not know of the currency sign, either. It was a big surprise to me since I had known about it well. On the other hand, she knew that the dollar sign is used for many currencies, such as US dollars, Canadian dollars, and Australian dollars. Despite that, she did not know the sign for our currency. She proved the saying in practice. She had not seen what needed to be seen in front of her eyes.
先日、妻と話をしていて時に、久しぶりに「灯台下暗し」という言葉が浮かんできました。何の話をしていたかというと、あるネット通販のサイトに表示されている金額が日本円ではなく、中国元で決済されたため、大損をしたニュースについてでした。サイトには、価格が数字と記号の「￥」だけで表示されていました。したがって、ユーザーが価格は日本円だと考えるのは当然だと思います。
でも、違っていたのです。記号は中国元を意味していたのです。そして、ユーザーは、日本円と中国元に同じ通貨記号が使われていることも知らなかったのです。その結果、日本円と中国元の換算レートから、ユーザーに日本円の20倍の請求がきたのです。
この話をしていた時、妻も日本円と中国元に同じ通貨記号が使われていることを知らなかったと気付きました。妻が知らなかったことに驚きました。その一方で、ドル記号「$」が米ドルだけでなく、カナダドルや豪ドルなど複数の国の通貨記号に使われていることはしていました。にもかかわらず、自国通貨の記号のことを知らなかったのです。まさに、「灯台下暗し」を地でいったのです。目の前の見るべきものを見ていなかったのです。
