October 17, 2023: Not to Run （走らない）

When I was in Europe, I was warned by my Dutch colleague not to run in public places in Europe. He told me that it was a shame and against European practice. I did not expect Europe to have such a practice. In Japan, I used to run wherever. But I was never warned not to run, although I was told that it was dangerous for me to run. So I was astonished that he told me not to run.
I learnt the European practice while travelling with my Dutch colleague on business. We were at Zurich Airport in Switzerland to take a flight to Amsterdam. As we had plenty of time for the flight, we discussed the meeting we had had with our Swiss customer. Then, it got so heated that we forgot about the departure time of our flight. It was only 10 or 15 minutes before the departure time that we realized that we would miss the flight. So we rushed to the boarding gate of the flight and I began to run to the boarding gate. A few minutes after I began to run, I was aware that my colleague did not follow me and looked back over my shoulder. Then he did not run. He walked at a faster pace than usual but did not run. So I stopped running and waited for him. As soon as he came to me, he explained about the practice. After that, I ceased to run and walked quickly with my colleague.
It was good to learn, and follow, what Europeans do. But we missed the flight and had to return via Frankfurt in Germany. If we had kept running, we could have caught the direct flight to Amsterdam.

　欧州にいたときに、オランダ人の同僚に、欧州では公共の場で走らないようにと注意されたことがあります。公共の場で走るのは、恥ずかしい行為であり、慣習に反すると言われました。日本では所構わず走り回っていました。走ると危ないと言われたことはありましたが、そんな注意は受けたことはありませんでした。同僚からこれを言われたときは驚きでした。
このことを知ったのは、同僚とスイスに出張にいった時です。スイスのお客さんとの商談を終え、オランダのアムステルダムに帰るため、チューリッヒ空港にいました。まだたっぷり時間があったので、その日の打ち合わせについて議論しました。そしたら、議論が白熱してしまい、フライトの出発時刻のことを忘れてしまったのです。そして、それに気づいたのは、出発の10分か15分まえくらいでした。ボクたちは慌てて、搭乗ゲートに向かいました。その時、ボクは走り出したのですが、数分後に、同僚がついて来ていないことに気づいたのです。振り返ると、同僚は走っていませんでした。早足で歩いてはいますが、走っていませんでした。仕方ないので、ボクは走るのを止めて、同僚を待ちました。そして、同僚がボクのところに来るやいなや、この慣習のことを説明してくれました。その後は、走るのを止め、同僚と早足で歩きました。
欧州の慣習を学び、倣うことはいいことです。でも、そのおかげで、乗るはずの便に乗り遅れてしまい、ドイツのフランクフルト経由で帰る羽目になりました。搭乗ゲートまで走っていたら、アムステルダムまでの直行便に乗れたはずです。
