April 6, 2023: Construction in Car Park, Foreign Workers (駐車場の工事、外国人作業者)

The other day, I was seeing a paid car park in front of my flat. Then, I found a scene I had never seen before. Construction has been now underway there. As I was intrigued by it, I had been watching what would happen there. Then, I saw five workers starting to put up fences in some parts of the park. A leader was giving other four members instructions, and other members do their work according to the instructions. It seemed to me that they were doing their assignments well with good communication. However, they surprised me when I watched them more closely. Not all of them were Japanese. Three of them were black Africans and spoke Japanese. That was a big surprise to me. They spoke Japanese well enough to communicate with Japanese workers. They seemed to enjoy talking with Japanese workers. The Africans, in threes, did their assignments given by the leader. One of them made holes in the ground with a drill, and the other two put heavy fences into the holes. I hope they will stay in Japan as long as possible.

　先日、家の向かいにある有料駐車場をながめところ、見慣れない風景に出会いました。そこで工事が行われていたのです。気になったので、何が起こるのかとずっと見ていました。そしたら、5人の作業者が駐車場の一部の区画に柵を立て始めたのです。リーダーが残りの4人に指示を出し、それに従って4人は作業をしていました。全員がコミュニケーションをとって作業を順調にこなしているようでした。
　しかし、ボクは、彼らのことをよく見て驚かされました。全員が日本人というわけではなかったのです。その内の3人はアフリカ系の人たちで、日本語を話していました。これにはびっくりです。日本語は日本人作業者とコミュニケーション取れるくらい上手で、楽しそうに会話をしていました。彼らは、3人一組で、リーダーが与えた作業をこなしていました。一人が、道路にドリルで穴を開け、残りの二人が重い柵を穴に取り付けていました。
　日本長く住み続けて欲しいものです。
