Some children’s books have some very spooky and scary characters in them and yet they warm kids’ hearts. I asked my son why this might be and this was his answer.
To be okay with being scared and feeling anxious.
It’s something we all need to learn along the way.
Today’s Pair may be scary for younger kids but they have an ending that’s like a warm hug and they will show kids that experiencing some fear is worth it, if it answers to your curiosities.
In “What was I Scared of?” the main character talks about his scary encounters with ‘the spooky pale green pants with nobody inside’em.’
As scary as it was for the main character, the pale green pants were equally scared. But when they stopped running and truly saw each other, they were able to realize how nice encounters could be.
『こんたのおつかい』is about a fox boy who goes on an errand and decides to take the road through the forest that his mom has repeatedly told him not to take.
Not surprisingly the boy gets chased by all different types of Yokai (Japanese monsters) and ghosts. With lots of funny word play and an ending that greets the fox boy and the readers with comfort, all kids will want to read the story over and over again.
「最後が大丈夫だからじゃん！」
子供の絵本には、怖く、不気味な登場人物が出てきても何故か子供たちに優しく寄り添ってくれる絵本があります。それはどうしてなのか、息子に聞いたとき返ってきたのがこの答えでした。
怖いという気持ちを落ち着いて持てること。ドキドキすることを恐れないこと。それを学ぶことは生きていく上で必要なのかもしれない。
Today's Pairは小さい子にはすこし怖いかも。でもどちらも最後はあたたかく抱きしめてくれるようなお話になっています。そして自分の好奇心を満たすためなら、少しのドキドキも価値があると子供たちに思わせてくれます。
“What was I Scared of?”はひとりでに動く不気味な緑色のズボンに主人公が何度も出会うストーリー。ただ主人公が感じていたのと同じくらい、そのズボンにとってもその出会いは恐怖体験だったのだ。お互いを避けるのではなくちゃんと見てあげることで、「出会い」の良さに彼らは気づいていく。
『こんたのおつかい』はおつかいに出たキツネのこんたがお母さんに止められていた「もりのみち」を進むところからはじまるお話。案の定色々な妖怪やおばけに追いかけられることになるが、たのしい言葉遊びとあたたかい結末がこんたと読者を迎えてくれるので、お話が終わったときにはまた読み返したくなるだろう。
