First of all, it costs a lot of money. You need to buy plane tickets to Tanzania and this time it cost around 1500 bucks for round trip. It depends on the season how expensive the tickets will be but I bought the tickets in July for the trip in September so around two and a half months in advance, It’s not that expensive comparing with the tickets to Europe right?
And it’s normal that you pay for plane tickets but something I tell you next might come as a surprise to you.

Did you know that we also have to pay to climb mt. Kilimanjaro? Most mountains in Japan are free to climb so even ppl who are used to mountain climbing in Japan, it’s a surprising thing to know. If you have experiences climbing mountains abroad this might be normal.

So how much do you think we have to pay for 5 days six nights trip. This includes everything from food to the mountain hut cost.
It cost 2500 bucks. BTW this is the cost when you don’t use the travel agency in Japan so when you use the agency I guess it will be way more expensive than this.
And when you break this 2500 bucks down on a per diem basis it’s more then 400 bucks so you might wonder what it’s for?

That’s a good question. Not just for food and mountain hut you also have to pay for the guide and mountain climbing fee. Fee is $890 and it’s regulated that you have to bring at least two porters per person to carry your stuff. And you have to have a cook per group to cook meal while you’re in the mountains.

We’re a group of 6 so we had one main guide Aroni, two sub guides, one cook, one waitress and 10 porters. So that’s 15 ppl in total to bring 6 travelers to the summit. Cook and waitress were also working as a porter.

You might doubt if you really need this much of ppl to climb but once you climb Kilimanjaro you’ll realize how helpful it is to have this team to support you. Porters put our bag-pack inside their burlap bags and put it on top of their head and climb while many of them are also carrying something on their back as well. When you are at high altitudes, it’s really tough to step forward even with a small amount of backpack so everyone was super thankful to the porters.

The next challenge is mountain sickness. It’s being said the average summit success rate across all climbers and routes is 65%. I didn’t get any mountain sickness when I climbed mt Fuji this year but I can’t fail to reach the summit paying tons of money so I decided to get some mountain sickness medicine,
There’s a place called Sendagaya International click where the doctor boasts all the ppl who are being prescribed mountain sickness medicine here were able to reach to the summit.

As a result, everyone successfully reached the summit without having mountain sickness. We saw ppl throwing up while climbing or giving up to reach the summit so I strongly recommend you to prepare the medicine. Don’t overestimate yourself and think I’m strong so I’ll be fine.
BTW I got there kinds of medicine prescribed and it cost around 140 bucks.

The Third challenge is the physical strength. One of the members who I climbed together didn’t do any exercise before climbing kill but she was actually able to reach the top. However, she didn’t have enough energy to climb down so she got a ride from the hut which is at 3720 meters.

Kili is said to be the highest mountain amateurs can climb so it’s not that difficult to reach the peak but it’s better to be prepared.
Another member who is also an amateur mountain climber went to Kumotori Mt, Kitadake which is the second highest mountains in Japan and then climbed Kilimanjaro so you can see that you don’t necessarily have to have a lot of experiences of climbing mountains.

And Last but not least, you need to have a full mountain climbing equipment to climb kill. I had most of them cuz my hobby is mt climbing but if you are to buy equipments just for Kilimanjaro I’m afraid you probably need 2000 bucks….

So today I explained about the four main challenges you’ll face in the prepare for mt, Kilimanjaro but does anyone still want to climb mt kill after hearing all this? If yes, go for it! And please let me know your thoughts after climbing. I’m waiting for you!!
