Precedent 「前例」

記念すべき第１回の今回は「precedent」について書いていく。
ロングマン英英辞書によれば、

pre‧ce‧dent /ˈpresɪdənt/ noun

①　an action or official decision that can be used to give support to later actions or decisions

②　something of the same type that has happened or existed before

日本語に訳すと「前例」となるだろう。やはり英辞郎で調べると「前例」「先例」「慣例」と出てきた。

ロングマンからの例文としては、
There’s not much precedent for men taking leave when their baby is born.　ー 男性が育児休暇を取る前例はあまりない

「taking leave」＝休暇を取る

余談だが、私は英英辞書で意味を調べて、それでも理解できなかったら英日辞書で調べるようにしているのだが、みなさんはどうだろうか？

この単語の使われ方として 「no precedent」もしくは「unprecedented」で「前例がない」があった。

Her healthcare plan campaign was an unprecedented policy initiative for a First Lady.
ー彼女の医療保険制度改革キャンペーンは、大統領夫人としては前例のない政治活動だった。（英辞郎）
