今日読んだ英字ウェブページで、個人的に「面白い」と思った英語表現を紹介していく。
今回はCNNのニュース記事。内容は要約すると「ヨーロッパのスキー場、雪少なすぎ問題」だ。

European ski resorts close because there's no snow

この記事で新しく知った単語はchalet（シャレー）。意味はスイス山地にある山小屋、あるいはそれを模した別荘。

The view out of her chalet window has always been more or less the same -- wide expanse of mountains, hills and chalets, all capped in frothy, thick snow.

all capped in frothy, thick snow (一面厚い泡雪で覆われている)という表現も何気に有用。covered以外で「雪景色」を表現したい時に使える。

次に、新しく意味を見つけた単語はslope（スロープ）。
日本語でもよく聞く単語だが、「傾斜」の他に「スキーのゲレンデ」という意味もある。
ちなみにゲレンデはドイツ語。カルテやアルバイトと同じだ。

Now, instead of spending her days on the slopes, Harrison's been watching the wildlife buzzing about her balcony. The birds, she suggests, seem equally confused by the spring-like conditions.

the wildlife buzzing about her balcony(バルコニーの中を飛び回る野生動物)とは鳥のこと。どうやらHarrison夫人も鳥も戸惑っていた(equally confused)らしい。そりゃビビるわな。

そして、このニュース記事で久々にwould-beを見かけた。

The skis have been put away. Many of Harrison's fellow would-be skiers have gone home.

Harrison's fellow would-be skiers。「スキーをしにきた人たち」というよりfellowが付いているので「ハリソンのスキー友達」と訳した方が自然そうだ。
あと、スキーができない状態をThe skis have been put away.（スキー板はしまったまま）と言い表わすところがいい。安易にcannotやimpossibleを使わない点がスマートだ。

他にも、can't escape the factという表現にも注目したい。

"You still can't escape the fact that everywhere in the Alps is below par in terms of snow depths at this stage of the season."

「〜の事実から逃げられない」＝「〜という事実を無視できない」または「〜の事実を認めざる負えない」
発想自体は単純だが今まで思いつかなかった表現。灯台下暗しだ。

ニュース本文のreminiscentの使い方もチェックするべきだろう。

The temperatures there, she tells CNN Travel, are more reminiscent of spring than early January.

reminiscentを比較級で用いれば、「be more reminiscent of A than B」で「BというよりAを思い出させる」＝「BというかAだね」という風に、感覚で感じた話を英語で行うことができる。
しかし「春並みに暖かい1月上旬」とは一体、、、。

最後に、drip drip feedという表現を取り上げる。

Bennett tells CNN Travel that overall "it has been a drip drip feed of slightly worse conditions and less ski days."

drip-feedの意味を調べた結果、『macmillandictionary.com』では「supplying something slowly, little by little」、『thefreedictionary.com』では「to supply (information) constantly but in small amounts」と紹介されていた。よって、drip-feedは「ゆっくりと少量ずつ与えられる」という解釈になる。
drip dripの部分から推測していたが、やはり「少しずつ」のニュアンスはあるようだ。
ニュース本文の「"it has been a drip drip feed of slightly worse conditions and less ski days."」は「スキーのシーズンは徐々に短くなっていき、スキー場のコンディションも徐々に悪くなっていく」と訳すべきか。（slightlyの意味を上手く訳文に反映できない、、、）

以上、今回特に気になった表現をいくつか紹介した。

それにしてもヨーロッパは今、気候変動の影響を思いっっきり受けているようだ。
ニュースにも書かれている通り、正に"Climate change is at work."（ただいま気候変動進行中）である。
