田中正造伝記52(日本語と英語)

この時東京毎日新聞編集部には、木下尚江、幸徳秋水、遅れて石川半山が集まっていました。
言わば、「天皇直訴」のプロデューサー揃い踏み、といった所でしょうか。
最初に記者に質問したのは木下でした。
「それで、田中翁はどうなったのだ？」
記者は無念そうに答えました。
「警官に連れていかれました。」
「黙って見ていたというのか？」
すると、石川が木下をたしなめるように言いました。
「木下君、そこまでにしよう。今我々がすべき事は、田中翁が何故そのような行動を取ったのか記事にして、世間に訴える事だろう。」
「田中翁は断罪されるのですか？」
「分からない。ただ、私は彼の覚悟を聞いている。だから連載記事を作ったし、ここにいる幸徳くんを紹介したりした。」
「その通りだ。」幸徳は応じました。
「本音を言えば、直訴状は書くつもりはなかったよ。でもね、木下君、命を捨てる覚悟で頼む田中翁の姿を見ると
無下に出来ないよ。」
いつしか三人の眼には光るものが
溢れていました。

翌日。
各新聞はこの事件を大きく取り上げました。
そして、「田中翁が釈放されました。」
石川半山と木下尚江が見たのは、
支援者に抱えられた田中正造の姿でした。
正造は自虐的に叫びました。
「我、狂人田中正造なり❗」

At this time, Kinoshita Naoe, Koutoku Shusui, and later Ishikawa Hanzan gathered at the Tokyo Mainichi Shinbun editorial office.
In other words, they were all producers of 
"direct appeals to the Emperor”.
It was Kinoshita who first asked the reporter a question.
”So what happened to Elder Tanaka?”
The reporter replied regretfully.
”He was taken away by the police.”
”And you just stood by and watched? You!”
Kinoshita said as he shouted.
Then, Ishikawa said as if to reprove Kinoshita.
”Kinoshita, that's enough. What we should do now is to write an article on why Mr. Tanaka acted the way he did and appeal to the public.”
”Is Elder. Tanaka to be condemned?”Kinoshita asked.

Ishikawa answered,” I have no idea. But I was hearing him if he was ready.That's why I made a series of articles and introduced Koutoku-kun here.”

”Exactly.”Koutoku responded.”

”To tell you truth,I wasn't going to write a direct letter of complaint. But, Kinoshita-kun, when I saw Mr.Tanaka asking for it with the resolve to lay down his life,I could not ignore him.”
Before long, the three of them were filled with a tear in their eyes.

The next day.
Newspapers covered the incident extensively.
Then,a reporter said,”Mr.Tanaka was released.”

What Ishikawa Hanzan and Kinoshita Naoe saw was Shozo Tanaka being held by his supporters.
Shozo cried out in a self-deprecatig manner,

”I am Shozo Tanaka, a madman!!”
