イスラエルのホロコースト教育

私が小学生（10、11歳）だった頃、最初にホロコーストについて学んだことを覚えています。たぶん子供の頃のわたしはその意味がよくわかっていませんでした。でも、それがユダヤ民族にとって大きな悲劇だったと教えられたことは覚えています。そして死ぬまでその事を忘れてはいけないと。

高校では、私たちはホロコーストと第二次世界大戦についてさらに学び始めました。ナチス政権によるホロコーストによって600万人ものユダヤ人が命を奪われたことを知りました。エルサレムにある「ヤドバシェム」という、有名なホロコースト追悼博物館に学校の校外学習で行くこともありました。そこには、ホロコースト時代に生きていたユダヤ人の書類や手帳、持ち物、そして写真を見ることができます。

さらに高校二年生になると、「Hamasa LePolin」と呼ばれるポーランドへの修学旅行がありました。私はそれに参加し、忘れる事のできない体験をしました。
その旅行ではワルシャワと、クラクフ、そしてアウシュビッツの絶滅収容所を訪れました。それぞれの場所で私たちは、セレモニーを行い、ホロコーストとその中で命を落とした人々のことについての歌を歌い、彼らが書き残したメモを読みました。それは感情的で力強いものでした。

その旅行から、ホロコーストが以下に恐ろしいもので、ナチスがどれほど酷く、非人道的だったかを理解させられました。同時に、「平和」について、世界でそれを達成することがどれほど大事なのかも考えるようになりました。

毎年、イスラエルではホロコースト犠牲者のための追悼セレモニーを５月に行います。また、すべての高校でも生徒と先生だけですが、同じセレモニーを行います。この日は午前10時になるとイスラエルの全国民が1分間、起立し、ホロコーストで命を落とした人々や、その家族、生還者のことを思い、追悼します。

I remember, as a child in elementary school (at age 10-11), I first learned about the Holocaust. I guess that as a child I didn’t really know what it meant, but I remember that we have been told that it was a disaster for the Jewish nation and that we have to keep remember it until the day we die.
In high school, we started to learn more about the Holocaust, and also about War World 2. We learned that 6 million Jewish lost their lives by the Nazis in the holocaust. There was also a school trip to the famous holocaust remembrance museum in Jerusalem called Yad VaShem. At this museum, you can see files, notebooks, items, and pictures of the Jewish that were in the Holocaust. Furthermore, in eleventh grade, there was a school trip to Poland, called “Hamasa LePolin” (The journey to Poland). I joined that trip, and it was an experience to remember. On that trip, we went to Warsaw, Krakow, and Auschwitz, and visited the Extermination camps, and had ceremonies in each place which contained songs about the holocaust and the people who lost their lives and read texts of the people who was in the holocaust. It was emotional and powerful. It really made me realize how terrible was the holocaust, and how awful and inhumane was the Nazis. Also, it made me think about peace, and how important it is to achieve that in the world.
Every year, in May, Israel is doing a memorial ceremony for the Holocaust victims. Also, every high school is having the same ceremony, but only for the high school students and teachers. On this day, at 10 A.M in the morning, all Israeli citizens stand up for a minute for those who lost their lives at the holocaust, and for those who survived and lost their families.
