ジャンからバファル帝国の首都、メルビルへと来るよう言われたクローディアは、メルビルの都会ぶりに驚いていた。

「私・・・ずっと森で暮らしていたから・・・田舎っぽく思われないか心配ね」

皇帝のいる宮殿に入るのも、自分なんかが行ってもよいものか、非常に不安だった。案の定、門番の兵士に止められた。

「ここは、皇帝陛下の宮殿だ！立ち去れ！」

「私はクローディアと言います。親衛隊のジャンに会いに来ました」

「え・・・あなた様は・・・お待ちください」

クローディアは、なぜか、自分が話すと兵士の態度が変わったことに違和感を感じた。しかし、彼女は気にしないことにした。数分待つと、ジャンがやってきた。

「宮殿の私の部屋へ案内しますよ」

ジャンの部屋で少し会話した後、今度はネビルという男に会うよう促され、ネビルの部屋へと一緒に向かった。

「ネビル様！お連れしました」

「うむ、ご苦労。クローディアさん、いかがかな、メルビルは。迷いの森と違って、にぎやかだろう」

「…うるさい所ですね」

「うるさい、か。確かにそうかもしれん。ジャンよ、この事は当分の間、秘密にしておくように。彼女の警護には信頼できる者を手配しろ」

「それでは私が護衛を・・・」

「お前には別の任務がある。本日はわざわざおいでくださり、ありがとうございました。ジャンに宿まで送らせましょう」

クローディアとジャンの二人は宮殿から出て、メルビルでも高級な宿屋へと向かった。

「なぜ、あの人に会わせたの？ジャン、わたしはあなたに会いに来たのよ」

「それは、その…ネビル隊長は立派な方ですから、是非お引き合わせしておきたかったんです。今日は私が見張りをしていますから、ここでお休みになってください」

「野宿ではないのだから、見張りは必要ないでしょう？」

「いえ、意外と、こういう都会は危険なものなんですよ」

翌朝、宿屋には一人の男が来ていた。

「今日は、あなたに紹介しておきたい男が来るんです」

「グレイと申します」

「私はクローディアと言います」

クローディアとグレイはローバーンへ行くことになった。

バーバラとアイシャの二人は、クリスタルシティへと向かうことにした。
