解説

「Red House Painters (Rollercoaster)」はPixiesやCocteau Twinsらを輩出してきた名門レーベル4ADから1993年にリリースされたRed House Paintersの二枚目となるスタジオアルバムだ。1992年にデビューアルバム「Down Colorful Hill」をリリースしてスロウコアの旗手として名乗りを上げた彼らだが、今作は少し毛色が違う。スロウコアとはいってもCodeineやDusterといったジャンルを代表する他のバンドと比べるとやや仰々しいようにも感じてしまうサウンドなのだ。その仰々しさ、湿っぽさは勿論4曲目「Mistress」に代表されるようなスロウコアにしては異常なほどの”美メロ”が原因でもあると思うのだが、私はその歌詞にも原因があるのではないかと思った。

　ここでRed House Paintersについて簡単に経歴を辿りたい。彼らは1988年にボーカル、ギターであるMark Kozelekを中心に結成されたサンフランシスコのバンドだ。6枚のアルバムを残してRed House Paintersは2001年に解散する。Mark Kozelekは現在、Sun Kil Moonとして活動中だ。このサンフランシスコという土地も重要で、歌詞には幾度もHillという単語が登場するのだが、それは起伏のある坂が多いサンフランシスコの景観を想起させると同時に、Markの精神的な苦痛や重荷としての”丘”も意味する。また、Markがオハイオからサンフランシスコに越してきた際の困惑も歌詞に表れている。彼にとって土地は重要な意味を持っているのだ。

　さらに歌詞を追っていくとほとんどがMarkの深い内省になっている。その内省は一つの飾り気もない内省だ。その歌詞では彼の過去の女性に対する扱いを振り返り、幼少期の純朴な記憶へまでも遡るのだが、毎回帰結するのは結局”いま”の不透明な孤独なのだ。そのどうしようもなくてリアルで生々しい利己的な内省が何となく湿っぽさにも繋がっているのではないだろうか。アルバムカバーに使われているRollarcoasterはブルックリンにあるConey Islandという遊園地にあったThunderboltというジェットコースターだ。このRollarcoasterはMarkの幼少期の記憶の象徴でもあるのだが、それは同時にその堂々巡りの内省のメタファーとも捉えられる。Markはどうしようもなく情けない独りよがりな男だ。その不完全さが聴く者の不健全な共感を引き起こすのだろう。

　冗長に展開する曲調ははっきり好みが分かれると思う。ポストロックのようなカタルシスもなくただグダグダと演奏していて気づいたら長尺になっているという印象を受けるかもしれない。ただ、このグダグダとしたアルバムにグダグダと付き合っているといつの間にか好きになっているのだ。
