「大リーグの開幕決定」が意味する「選手会の勝利」

現地時間の6月23日（火）、大リーグ機構は2020年の公式戦を7月24日（金）前後に開始し、レギュラーシーズンを60試合の予定で実施することを公表しました[1]。

大リーグ選手会は6月22日（月）に60試合制での実施を提案した大リーグ機構の計画を拒否し、機構側が強行開催の権利を即日で行使していました[2]。

元来、選手会側が70試合制を要求していたことを考えれば、60試合制となったことは、機構側の主張が実現したことを意味します。

従って、試合数に関しては、両者の対立は機構側の勝利に帰したことになります。

一方、年俸については、通常の162試合制が60試合制に変更されたことに合わせて、試合数の減少に応じた金額、すなわち所定の年俸額の約37%が支払われることになりました[1]。

年俸が当初の金額の37%まで減少したことは選手にとっては痛手ではあるものの、機構、さらに球団経営者が年俸額の高い選手の削減幅を大きくし、低年俸の選手の削減幅を小さくすることで実質的な年俸総額制の実施を計画していたことを考えれば、機構及び経営者側の企図が実現しなかったことを意味します。

1994年から1995年にかけて起きたストライキを参照するまでもなく、選手会にとっては年俸総額制は決して受け入れられない制度であるため[3]、年俸の削減が試合数に完全に比例したことは、選手会の勝利となります。

このように考えれば、機構及び経営者陣営は試合数、選手会側は年俸削減額と、それぞれの主張に基づいた成果を得たことになります。

そして、「譲れない一線」であった実質的な年俸総額制の導入を回避できたという点で、少なくとも今回の労使の対立は、選手会側がより大きな利益を得たと言えるでしょう。
