大雪。

　各地で大雪になっていますが、みなさんいかがお過ごしでしょうか。私の住んでいるところは大雪なので、今日も楽しく引きこもっています。

　さて、今週は試験期間なのでゆっくりしています。学生たちは試験勉強やレポートに追われて忙しい時期ですが、教員は「試験問題を作成して、解答用紙を配布して、回収する。」を繰り返しています。今は暇でいいですが、終わってからいよいよ冬のサイテンが始まります。さらには今年度の報告書や清算、来年度の計画やシラバスの作成、さらにはHPのプロフィールの確認等といった細かい作業が続きます。その合間を縫って出張も入れてしまったので、結局来週からはまた忙しい日々になりそうです。

　ただ、授業はありませんのでこの時間に職場に行かなければならないという拘束はありません。唯一拘束されるのは会議だけで、それ以外は基本自由です。この自由が４月まで続くのですから、やっぱり大学教員は自由ですよね。雪のニュースで足元の悪い中、出勤しているサラリーマンを見ていると「もうあの生活に戻れないな。」とつい思ってしまいます。恐らく今の日本でこんなに自由に働けて、かつ安定している仕事は大学教員だけではないでしょうか。医師も高い給与をもらえますが、時間にはかなり追われているイメージです。緊張感もかなり高いのではないでしょうか。それに比べると大学教員は比較的気楽に働ける職種だと思います。

　そんなことを思いつつ、先日とある方の紹介で占いをしてもらいました。その占い師さんによる今年は比較的安定期で、来年が変革期、その次の年が幸運期だそうです。とくに来年は大きな変化があって、その変化の結果が次の年の幸運期に大きく影響を与えるとのことでした。来年は大学教員になって５年になります。うちの大学では一応５年勤めると教授に昇格する資格を得られることと、サバティカル（使途に制限がない職務を離れた長期休暇）を取ることができるようになります。私は出世欲があまりないので、責任が重くなる教授になりたいと思いませんが、給料もらいながら長期休暇できるサバティカルはとても魅力的です。できれば、これを使って海外に行きたいと考えています。

　占い師さんからは、「先生、占いを勉強されたらどうですか？」とお誘いを受けました。占いできる大学教員でYouTubeで売り出そうかなとつい邪な考えが頭をよぎってしまいました。でも、新しい知識を得ることはやっぱり楽しいですね。この好奇心が大学教員としてのモティベーションの源泉かもしれません。

　これから大学教員になる人には、自由に働ける仕事だということを実感できる人になってほしいと思います。そして、常に子どものような好奇心を持って何事にも取り組んでもらいたいです。

Heavy snow.

It's snowing heavily everywhere, how are you all doing? It snows heavily where I live, so I'm having fun and retreating today.

Well, this week is the exam period, so I'm taking it easy. Students are busy studying for exams and writing papers, but teachers keep writing exam papers, distributing answer sheets, and collecting them. I'm free now, but after it's over, the winter satin begins. Then there are the details of reporting and liquidation for this year, planning and syllabus for next year, and even checking HP profiles. I put in a business trip in between, so it looks like I'll be busy again next week after all.

But there is no class, so there is no restriction that you have to go to work at this time. The only thing you can hold is a meeting, and everything else is basically free. This freedom continues until April, so university teachers are free after all. Watching the news about the snow makes me think, "I can't go back to that life." when I look at the office workers who are going to work in a bad place. Perhaps the only jobs in Japan today that are so free and stable are university teachers. Doctors are also paid well, but I have an image of being pressed for time. I guess the tension is pretty high too. I think university teaching is a relatively easy job compared to that.

With that in mind, I had my fortune told by someone the other day. According to the fortune-teller, this year is a relatively stable period, next year is a period of transformation, and the year after that is a period of good fortune. He said there will be a big change next year in particular, and the results of that change will have a big impact on the next year's lucky season. Next year I will be a university teacher for five years. At our university, after five years of service, you will be eligible to be promoted to professor, and you will be able to take a sabbatical. I don't have a lot of desire to get ahead, so I don't want to be a professor with heavy responsibilities, but a sabbatical where you can take a paid sabbatical is very attractive. If possible, I'd like to use this to go abroad.

The fortune-teller invited me to "Doctor, why don't you study fortune-telling?." A sordid thought crossed my mind about a university teacher who could tell fortunes and sell them on YouTube. But getting new knowledge is still fun. This curiosity may be the source of my motivation as a university teacher.

I hope that those who are going to become university teachers will be able to realize that it is a job they can work freely in. And I want them to always approach everything with childlike curiosity.
