You have been diagnosed with an injury to your meniscus.

The meniscus serves as a shock absorber (cushion) for your knee.

There are two menisci in each knee (medial and lateral).

The medial meniscus is more commonly torn than the lateral meniscus. Approximately 50% of people recall a specific injury.

The injury usually involves twisting with an occasional audilble pop and delayed swelling.

The torn fragments can get caught in your knee as you twist.

Unfortunately, when the meniscus is torn, it loses some of its ability to protect your knee.

Arthroscopic knee surgery done as an outpatient with possible meniscus repair or trimming depending on location of tear at the time of surgery.

If your meniscus is trimmed, you can put your full weight on your knee immediately after surgery and can return to sports at 6 weeks after surgery (on average).

If your meniscus is surgically repaired, you will need crutches for one month after surgery and can not return to sports for 4 months after surgery.

Surgery is most helpful for mechanical symptoms (pain with twisting, turning, locking, catching, instability).
