作曲家Gregg Alexanderが22年ぶりにOne-hit-wonder（一発屋）"New Radicals"を再結成した理由
Gregg Alexanderという米国の作曲家をご存じだろうか。
地味な存在だが、Santana、Rod Stewart、Adam Levine (Maroon 5)、Rivers Cuomo (Weezer)、Enrique Igresias、Hollies、Inxesなど数々のアーティストに楽曲を提供しており、旋律が美しい印象的で明るくテンポの良い楽曲が特徴的である。
2015年公開の映画『はじまりのうた』でAdam Levineが唄う主題歌"Lost Stars"を作曲したのが他ならぬGregg Alexanderだ。

Gregg Alexanderは1999年に"You get what you give"を一曲ヒットさせただけで解散してしまった"New Radicals"のボーカルを務めていた。ハチャメチャなPVで歌うあのスキンヘッドの男である。
一発屋として洋楽ファンの知る人ぞ知る存在だったGregg Alexanderが、コロナ禍の2021年1月20日、Joe Biden大統領とKamala Harris副大統領の就任式イベント"Parade Accross Amemrica"に突如登場した。
22年ぶりの再結成パフォーマンスは全米でテレビ中継され、オンラインでもバーチャル配信された。このバーチャルイベントには、Lady Gaga、
Justin Timberlake、Jeniffer Lopez、Tim McGrow、Earth Wind ＆ Fire (with Sister Sledge)、Bon Jovi、Bruce Springsteenなどの民主党寄りの大物アーティストが多数登場したが、22年前の忘れ去られた一発屋New Radicalsが登場したことは大きな驚きをもって迎えられ、世間の度肝を抜いた。
この歌は1990年代後半のITバブルで蔓延した拝金主義や貧富の格差が拡大する中で、希望を失って命を絶とうとする若者たちに対してメッセージを送る。

最後のフレーズは確かにケネディ大統領の就任演説（Ask not what your country do for your contry, ask what you can do for your county）を髣髴とさせる部分もある。

しかし、それだけで22年ぶりに復活パフォーマンスのオファーが大統領府からあるものだろうか。それに、Gregg Alexanderはだった一曲のヒット直後、自ら解散の道を選び、作曲家に徹していかなる再結成のオファーにも応じてこなかったのである。
Joe Biden大統領には2015年に46歳の若さで夭逝した長男がいた。デラウェア州の司法長官を務めた長男Beuである。Beau Bidenの死因は脳腫瘍で、妻と2人の子供を残して亡くなった。New RadicalsはBeauのお気に入りで葬儀の際にも”You get what you give”が葬送に使われたという。以来、Biden大統領一家のFamily Anthemとして愛されてきたという。
パフォーマンスを前にGregg Alexanderは以下の声明を発表しています。
『New Radicalsはセカンドシングルをリリースすることもなく、20年以上前に解散しました。”You Get What You Give”がバイデン家のファミリーアンセムだと聞いたとき、Joeが大統領選に勝ったなら再結成をして、大統領の息子Beauを記念し敬意を表して、そしてJoeが私たちの国を再びまとめることができることを祈って、この歌を演奏することを約束しました。Joe、Kamala、そして、あなたたちのために演奏するのです。』
"The band ended over 20 years ago before our second single was even released so when we heard You Get What You Give was a Biden family anthem, we pledged if Joe won, we'd get together and play our little song both in memory and in honor of our new President's patriot son Beau and also with the prayer of Joe being able to bring our country together again. Joe, Kamala, this one's for you.”
また、22年ぶりのオファーに応じて理由について、Rolling Stone誌のインタビューでGregg Alexanderは以下のように語っています。
「地球上でバンドをまとめる可能性のあるものが1つあるとすれば、たとえ1日だけでも、私たちの曲がこのような暗い時代に最も小さな光の標識になる可能性があるという希望です」
"If there's one thing on Earth that would possibly make us get the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could be even the tiniest beacon of light in such a dark time."
