The Origins of Fireworks in Japan

The tradition of launching fireworks in Japan began during the Edo period, specifically in Kyōhō 18 (1733). It originated from the Suijin Matsuri, a water deity festival held along the Sumida River. At that time, both the Kansai region and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) were suffering from famine and epidemics, resulting in many deaths. The Suijin Matsuri was organized to console the souls of the deceased and to ward off plagues. The first fireworks were launched during this festival. Following this, numerous fireworks masters, known as "Tamaya" and "Kagiya," emerged and began competing to create the most impressive displays. This practice quickly became popular among the people of Edo, who enjoyed the vibrant displays.
