【へっぽこ英会話５Months③】そろばん、メソポタミア文明が起源だった
少し前に、小学２年の娘が「そろばん（Abakas）」を始めた。
学年が上がって、算数が難しくなってきたようで、「算数きらい」と言い始めたからだ。
まだ２年生の時点で「算数きらい」発言は、非常にマズイと思って、そろばんのレッスンに連れて行ってみた。
新しいこと大好きな娘は、すぐに夢中になった。
おかげで、習い事は５つになった。
そんな話を英語でしてみようと思い立つ。
そろばんは、中国が起源だと漠然とイメージしていた。
調べてみるとメソポタミア文明（mesopotamian civilization）に使っていた計算方法が起源だとか。世界史好きな私には、興味深い情報である。
そして、１７５０年代に中国から日本に伝来。
それを説明しようにも、英単語が分からなさ過ぎて四苦八苦した。なんとか説明できるようになったので、読んで欲しい。
まさか、自分がメソポタミア文明を、英語で言う日がくるとは思わなかった…。

A few days ago, My daughter started to study abacus.
I try to explain the Abacus.
Before this class, I researched it because I'm not too sure about the details.
Abacus is calculator and made of wood.
You can Four arithmetic operations by playing a wooden ball.
そろばんについて説明してみます。
あまり詳しく知らないので、レッスン前に調べました。
そろばんは、計算道具で、木でできています。
ビーズを弾いて、四則演算をします。
This is originated from Mesopotamian civilization in 4000 BC.
They drew a line on the dirt or sand and placed pebbles on it to make calculations.
People said that is prototype of the abacus.
土や砂に線を引き、その上に小石を置いて計算をしました。
そろばんのはじまりです。
About 2,500 years ago, people in Egypt, Greece, and Rome drew scale lines on rock or wooden slabs and placed beads made of pebbles, bone, or ivory to calculate the numbers.
A bronze abacus that was used in Rome from about 2,300 years ago to about 1,500 years ago.
This Abacus crossed the Silk Road and was introduced to China.
このそろばんはシルクロードを越えて中国に伝わりました。
Then Japanese people knew Abacus from China in about 1750.
even today some Japanese people use the Abacas.
いまでもそろばんが使われています。
My daughter started to practice Abacas.
Because few days ago she told me that she doesn't like Math.
She hates addition and subtraction.
So I enrolled her into the Abacus course.
If she could acquire Abacus , she might be able to do mental arithmetic.
算数がきらいと言い始めたからです。
足し算引き算がきらいです。
そろばん教室に登録しました。
もし彼女がそろばんを習得したら、暗算ができるようになるかもしれません。
If I describe my daughter's personality, I would say she likes to experience new things.
She's academic and she's interested in a lot of sports, art and music.
She likes to think and to learn everything.
勉強好きで、スポーツ好きで、絵や音楽が好きです。
考えたり学んだりすることが好きです。
When I take care of my daughter, my method is increase her curiosity.
Nothing beats curiosity.
She likes trying new things but struggles to commit to one thing.
好奇心に勝るものはありません。
でもひとつのことを続けることが苦手です。
Anyway, it is important to practice something.
But most important thing is who's doing the teaching for her.
Abacus teacher teaches her very well.
She told her that Just calculating is not good.
Writing and calculating is both important.
Her teacher's teaching method is good for her.
She came to like math.
Math is very important for our economy and for the world.
I hope she will continue and endeavors.
最も重要なのは、誰から習うかです。
そろばんの先生は、そろばんだけできても良くないと言います。
読み書き両方が重要だと教えます。
その教えで、彼女は、算数が好きになりました。
算数は、経済や世界にとって重要です。
