グレンモーレンジ蒸留所の求人募集に応募しました

どうもヒデイシです。

昨日のノートにグレンモーレンジ蒸留所の求人募集を発見したと書きました。そして今日はその求人に応募しました。

そして応募するためには、グレンモーレンジ蒸留所が用意した質問に答える必要があり、その返答を昨日考えて、今日メールでその内容を送信。

英語でそういったことをするのは初めてで、記録するためにもnoteに残しておいた方が良いなと思ったので、返答とその日本語版を書いておきます。

では早速。。

参加する動機を教えてください。

Please outline your motivations for undertaking an Apprenticeship

スコットランドでウイスキー造りに参加したいから。動機は至ってシンプルです。

２年前、私は大好きなウイスキーのことより知るために日本から本場スコットランドに来て130箇所以上のウイスキー蒸留所を３ヶ月で巡りました。もちろんグレンモーレンジの蒸留所見学にも参加しています。そして、たくさんの蒸溜所でウイスキーの造り方を間近に見て感動し、自分もスコットランドでウイスキー造りに参加したいと強く思うようになりました。

そして今年スコットランドに戻ってくることができ、求人サイトで「ウイスキー
蒸留所」と検索したところ、グレンモーレンジ蒸溜所のApprenticeshipの募集を発見。こんなチャンスは中々ないと思い今回応募しました。

Because I want to participate in whisky making in Scotland. The motive is quite simple.

Two years ago, I came to Scotland from Japan to learn more about whisky, my favorite drink, and visited more than 130 whisky distilleries in three months. Of course, I also took a tour of the Glenmorangie distillery. I was impressed by the way whisky is made at many distilleries, and I strongly wanted to participate in whisky making in Scotland.

This year, I was able to come back to Scotland and searched for "whisky distillery" on a job site and found an opening for an Apprenticeship at Glenmorangie distillery. I thought it was a rare opportunity, so I applied for it.

What interests you about working in the Spirits Industry, and for The Glenmorangie Company specifically?

なぜグレンモーレンジは多くの人に受け入れられるウイスキーなのか？そしてそのウイスキーの造り方を実際に学んでみたいという興味を持っています。

私はスコットランドに来るまで日本でバーテンダーをしていたのですが、ある日ウイスキーが苦手な女性が来店。その時に、私はその女性にグレンモーレンジを提供しました。するとその女性は「このウイスキーは美味しい！こんなの初めて飲んだ！」と言いました。この女性に限らず、日本ではグレンモーレンジを好んで飲む人が沢山います。そして本場スコットランドでも一番飲まれているシングルモルトは”グレンモーレンジ”

もちろん私自身もグレンモーレンジの香りと味わいを愛しています。

そんなウイスキーがどのように造られているのかについて私は強く興味を持っています。

Why is Glenmorangie the whisky of choice for so many people? And I'm interested in actually learning how to make that whisky.

I used to be a bartender in Japan until I came to Scotland. One day a woman came to the bar who didn't like whisky, and I offered her a glass of Glenmorangie.She said, "This whisky is delicious! I've never had anything like it! Not only this woman, but there are many people in Japan who like to drink Glenmorangie. And even in Scotland, the most popular single malt is Glenmorangie.

Of course, I love the aroma and taste of Glenmorangie.

I have a strong interest in how such whisky is made.

パフォーマンスの高いチームで仕事をしたときのことを話してください。
そのチームがうまくいっていた理由は何ですか？

Describe a time when you worked in a well performing team.
What made it well performing?
(either through work experience/hobbies/sports etc

私は学生時代、野球部のチームリーダーをしていました。そしてチームのパフォーマンスが高くて上手くいっている時と、パフォーマンスが低くて上手くいっていない時どちらともリーダーとして経験したことがあります。

上手くいっている時は、チームメイト全員が同じ目標に向かって何かを成し遂げようとしている時でした。例えば、「地区大会で優勝する」という目標をチーム内ではっきり共有できている状況であれば、おのずとチームのパフォーマンスも上がります。

それとは反対に、チームの目標が無くメンバーがバラバラな方向に向いている時はパフォーマンスが落ちました。健康を維持するため、女性にモテるため、大会で優勝するためなどなど、野球をする目的が混在しているとチームはまとまらずパフォーマンスは落ちます。

これはウイスキー造りにも当てはまると私は考えます。もちろん柔軟な考えは必要です。生活のためにお金を手に入れること、パートナーを見つけるために手に職をつけることなど。ですが、その根底には「このチーム、この蒸留所ではどんなウイスキーを造りたいのか」という目標を掲げるのがチームのパフォーマンスを上げるために必要だと思います。

When I was a student, I was a baseball team leader. As a leader, I experienced both times when the team was performing well and doing well, and times when the team was performing poorly and not doing well.

The times when things were going well were when all teammates were working towards the same goal and trying to accomplish something. For example, if the team clearly shared the goal of "winning the tournament," the team's performance would naturally improve.

On the contrary, when there was no goal for the team and the members were heading in different directions, the performance dropped. If there is a mixture of goals in baseball, such as to stay healthy, to be popular with women, to win a tournament, etc., the team will not come together and performance will decline.

I believe this is also true for whisky producing. Of course, we need to be flexible in our thinking, whether it's to get money to live or to get a job to find a partner. But at the root of it all, I think it is necessary to set the goal of "what kind of whisky do we want to make in this team" in order to improve the performance of the team.

あなたがこの職務に最適な候補者であると考える理由は何ですか？

What do you believe makes you the best candidate for this role?

ウイスキー造りに対する情熱を強く強く持っているため、私はこの職務最適な候補者であると考えます。

正直、技術面で考えると私は最適な候補者ではないです。なぜならば大学でウイスキーについて研究したこともなく、仕事としてウイスキー造りを経験したこともないから。

私が持っているものは「スコットランドでウイスキーを造りたい」という想いだけ。ですがその想いが一番大切なのではないかと思います。

もちろん情熱以外のものもウイスキーを造る上で大切だと理解しています。情熱だけではウイスキーは造れません。自然、環境、時間などたくさんのことが絡みあってでき上がるのがウイスキー。ですが、人の力や想いが無ければウイスキーを造ることができないのも事実。

グレンモーレンジ蒸留所が応募者に求めることの一つに「enthusiasm」があるように、私はenthusiasmがあれば後から技術や経験は身につくものと考えています。私は生涯ウイスキーと関わり続ける人生を歩むと覚悟を決めているので、今回もし採用していただければ、一生涯「僕のウイスキー人生の扉を開けてくれたのはグレンモーレンジ蒸留所だ」と日本、そして世界中のウイスキーラバーにも言いつづけることでしょう。

今の僕のスキルではグレンモーレンジ蒸留所、ウイスキー業界に貢献できることはかなり限られていますが、将来の僕に賭けてチャンスを与えていただけないでしょうか？

最後に今回、もし私が採用に至らなかった場合、可能であれば研修という形も考えていただければありがたいです。もちろん賃金は必要ありません。グレンモーレンジ蒸溜所でウイスキー造りに参加するという経験を積める機会を得られることを願っています。

I believe I am the best candidate for this job because I have a strong and powerful passion for whisky producing.

To be honest, I am not the best candidate for the technical side of things because I have never studied whisky in college, nor have I had any work experience making whisky.

All I have is my desire to produce whisky in Scotland. But I think that is the most important thing.

Of course, I understand that things other than passion are also important in making whisky. Passion alone is not enough to make whisky. Nature, environment, time, and many other things are intertwined to make whisky. However, it is also true that whisky cannot be made without the power and passion of people.

One of the things that Glenmorangie Distillery looks for in applicants is "enthusiasm," and I believe that if you have enthusiasm, you will be able to acquire skills and experience later on. I have made up my mind that I will be involved with whisky for the rest of my life, so if I am hired this time, I will continue to say to whisky lovers in Japan and around the world, "Glenmorangie Distillery opened the door to my whisky life.

With my current skills, my contribution to the Glenmorangie distillery and the whisky industry is quite limited, but would you please give me a chance to bet on my future?

Finally, if I don't get the job this time, I would appreciate it if you could consider training me if possible. Of course, no wages are required. I hope to have the opportunity to gain the experience of participating in whisky making at the Glenmorangie distillery.
