The tyranny of meritocracy

One of the most common complaint on public insurance is that if you make effort on staying healthy, you can't benefit from the insurance rather you are giving away your money to people who are addicted to junk foods and rarely do exercise.

But it also can be regarded as a meritocratic way of thinking.

Sandel also indicates this kind of thought, blessed because of virtue, prevails in all sorts of political party in US. He critically mentioned another Hilary Clinton's comments: "America is great because America is good" pointing out in the history  great nations were not necessarily a righteous nation. The quote is started to be used since Eisenhower mistakenly cited the slogan as the Alexis de Tocqueville's (トグウィル) comment on America.
