今回は2017年度第3回英検1級のライティング問題を扱いたいと思います。

お題 Should Japan rethink its relationship with the United States?

以下がエッセイ。

It is often argued that forming a diplomatic relationship with the US cannot be overestimated owing to chaotic situation in which China strives to forcibly unify Taiwan and Russia atrociously invades Ukraine. While some political analysts say that maintaining strong alliances with America arouses great controversies, I am of the belief that Japan should reassess its connection with America.

One major contributing factor to support my idea is that America is the most  advanced nation. For instance, in terms of scientific perspectives, the US has invented numerous types of medicine and vaccines, thus elucidating enigmatic nature of various diseases. Furthermore, from industrial point of view, unfettered movement of ideas and data makes it possible for us to solve environmental issues. A case in point is driverless cars. This development has the potential to consign the use of gas-guzzling cars to oblivion, thereby decreasing emissions of carbon dioxide.

Additionally, it is obvious that America is home to wide variety of ethnic people. Such a diversity acts as a cornerstone of expediting mutual cultural exchanges and promoting lively discussions on international problems. In recent times, thanks to the rapid prevalence of social media such as Twitter and Facebook, it is possible that we can communicate with other people with various perspectives. Through the exploitation of this opportunity, there is every likelihood that increasing number of opinion exchanges on a variety of matters should be  expected, the accumulation of which may serve as a catalyst for solving ongoing social problems.

Another cogent reason to corroborate my stance is that we can boost proficiency in English. In light of the fact that English is a lingua franca, having a spectacular command of English must be a main asset in our society. For instance, newspapers or magazines written in English include far more practical and stimulating information than Japanese counterparts. Besides, many Japanese educational institutions have raised understanding of the importance of fostering international awareness. We cannot walk campuses or cramming schools without witnessing their "slogans" which emphasise the paramount importance of globalised society. Taking these factors into consideration, proficiency in English will be of vital significance to our daily lives.

Given politically or internationally precarious situation, it has been fashionable to be gloomy about our nations' economy and military affairs in modern days. Therefore, it is high time that we reached a stage where we need to enter a new phase in the way we rethink about relationships with the US lest formidable alliances with each other weaken.
