YouTuberメンタリストDAIGOさんの、ホームレスの人々に対する発言が問題になっています。18歳の娘がニュースをシェアしてくれて、二人で色々と話すうちに、これは私の生徒たちに投げかけるべき問いだ、と思ってメッセージを送りました。

生徒の皆さん、YouTuberメンタリストDAIGOさんのホームレスの人々に対する無礼な発言が問題になっています。
Daigo, a YouTuber called himself a mentalist, has sparked fierce criticism on his disrespectful comment against homeless people.

人生にはいろんなことが起きます。自分ではどうにもならないことが起こるのが人生です。一旦ホームレスになると、そこから抜け出せない社会の構造があることを、Yuki先生のニュース教材で5月に学んだのを中学生の皆さんは覚えてくれているでしょうか？

Anything can happen in life. There's a lot that one can't do anything about. Once you are homeless, it's hard to get out of the vicious cycle. It's not the one's problem but the system itself that our society created. I hope the middle school students remember our conversation in May using Yuki sensei's news text.
皆さんはホームレスの人を見かけたことはありますか？テレビで見たことはありますか？その時どう思いましたか？働くのが嫌で、だから道ばたで生活することを選んだ怠惰な人だと思いましたか？
Have you seen homeless people? If not, have you watched them on TV? What did you think then? Did you feel that they are lazy because they didn't want to work?
アメリカでは病院にかかるのに大変なお金がかかります。もし保険がないと、治療費で破産する人もいるのです。病気が理由でホームレスになる人は、怠惰で、生きる価値のない人でしょうか。
If you have no insurance in the US, you could go bankrupt because of the immense treatment cost. If you become homeless because of a sickness, does that mean you are lazy and not worth living?
社会というのは、そもそも弱い立場に置かれた人をみんなで協力して守るためにあると思います。コーチは「自助」という言葉にいつも大きな違和感を感じます。人は一人では生きていけない生き物だからです。
I think society exists to help each other and protect the most vulnerable. I am uncomfortable with the word"self-help" because no one can live alone, and no one should. It's not how we are made as humans.
この夏休み、勉強で忙しい生徒の皆さんが多いです。心から応援していますが、「自分の心と頭で考えること」「その考えをまとめて声にすること」を忘れないでくださいね！
Many of you students are busy studying for tests and exams, and I am cheering for you. But please don't forget to think "with your heart and mind" and "express the thought" always.
